Does anyone with type 2 eat whole grains exclusively - instead of any "enriched" breads, pasta, etc.? I know you can eat too much, etc. Just wondering if whole grains impacted your BS positively?

I'm not sure what you mean by "Just wondering if whole grains impacted your BS positively?"

While it's true that sometimes refined carbs raise the blood sugar faster and a bit more, even whole grains will raise blood sugar. If I eat a slice of whole wheat bread (made with 100% whole wheat flour) and a slice of white bread, I'll pretty much have to take the same amount of insulin and my blood sugar will rise approximately the same amount, give or take a few points. The whole grains, however, are much healthier and contain many more nutrients than the processed grains.

I was told in books that I read to eat whole grains only. It did not say that it would raise or lower my BS. I eat whole grains because it is healthier.

I suppose that, to the extent that they contain more fibre and vitamins, whole grains could be worse. But it is a bit like saying that an alcoholic should drink vitamin fortified gin. This is still not a good idea. And for a diabetic, grains are simply not healthy.

I have been told by doctors and books that grains are healthy. That is not the only thing I should eat, if that is what you mean. A diabetic needs a well rounded balanced diet. Saying that something is 100% right or wrong is wrong in itself. I agree that an alcoholic cannot drink even one drink. My father was an alcoholic and he quit drinking, but he was still an alcoholic. My mother was an alcoholic too but she denied it.

Getting back to diabetes, the original question had to do with refined grains or whole grains, not eating only whole grains and no other foods. The question was having to do with only part of the diabetic diet.

I beg to differ. For the simple reason that, by definition, a diabetic has a problem metabolising carbohydrates. The main component of grains is carbohydrate. So it goes almost without saying that feeding grains to diabetics will make them sick. Add to this the fact that carbohydrate is a non-essential nutrient. It simply gets used for energy. And there are are far more suitable energy sources for people who can't cope with carbs.

Grains are not the only food that are slowly killing diabetics. Potatoes, rice, pasta, fruit and stuff made with sugar and flour fall into the same category. You don't need any of this stuff in your diet. INMHO, it is the pre-occupation with carbs that is driving the T2 diabetes epidemic and making recovery from this condition almost difficult. T1s are also suffering at the hands of high-carb dietitians who do more harm than good.

The ADA says that you should eat more grains, beans & starchy foods than anything else.

If you don't eat any of the things you listed, what else is left that you do eat?

My dietician told me that I should eat potatos (about 3 medium sized), pasta or rice with each dinner and that I should eat dark bread high on fibre (8 - 9%per 100 grams of bread) to keep the blood sugars stable etc., but i'm a type 1 diabetic, dunno if that makes a difference?
As far as the blood sugar raising goes, is that everything that has complex or simple sugars (think it's called that in english) raise your blood sugar, those include all kinds of flour (that I know of), "nomal" sugar, fruit sugar,(fructose), glucose etc..
