I have a slightly raised, red, itchy circular spot on my arm which the doctor said was ringworm. Hey gave me some cream (Lamisil) about 2 weeks ago which I am to apply twice daily. I have been applying the cream & keeping the area dry but it is still there! How long does it take ringworm to go away? Also I have been getting itchy in other areas (stomach, back etc) I don't have the same circular, red spot but I do have tiny little bumps, is my ringworm spreading to other areas? It is driving me crazy!!

Hi D3sire,
I have ringworm of the body too. Firstly, I spoke to some people who mention they had it and they recovered quite quickly so there is hope. Mine is quite widespread, for ages I just thought it was eczema so wasn't treating it correctly so I think mine started in Spring this year.
I am on tablets (lamisil) at the moment and so far its not gone. I tried creams at first mainly canesten but it didn't work for me, I will have taken the tablets for 4 weeks on Thursday and they haven't got rid of it, so I may need to take them even longer as I think you usually have to take them at least a month, but I am worried that they are just not effective. I don't know why its so hard to get rid off. I feel so itchy with mine at certain times it drives me up the wall. Bathing tends to make mine look really red but generally it is quite pale pink and dry looking the pigmentation is affected on my skin too.
I am so frustrated. I have an appointment with a dermatologist but not til December because of the long waiting list.
Keep me in touch with how you get on with treatment etc
I bought some organic apple cider vinegar which some people use for other skin conditions diluted with water it is apparently anti fungal, I will test it on a little patch and see what it does. Just in case you try it do dilute it properly as someone with seborrheic derm tried it but used it too neat and it can burn a bit, however the same person noticed significant improvement in his skin after a few days, so it must be good stuff.
best wishes

Thanks for the info! I had no idea what a hassle this was going to be. I figured you put the cream on & it would go away.
When you develop it in other areas of the body does it start off as tiny little bumps? like red spots that itch? I am getting these in other areas of the body, & im an not sure if this is just me overracting or if it is spreading?
Do you wash your effected areas? The doctor told me to keep it clean but dry? I am uncertain if I should be washing it with soap? For the most part I am just trying to keep it as dry as possible & only applying the Lamisil cream perscribed.
I think I will wait another week and if no improvement go back to the doctor & maybe get on oral medication, you said the oral meds aren't helping either??

ETA: I just read on another site that covering the area with nail polish will suffocate it & it will go away. Have you tried this? Or putting salt on it to dry it up? Are these things worth trying?

Hi D3sire,
I have been washing my patches with something gentle for sensitive skin. However, my skin feels quite irritated after bathing and looks very red if I have had a bath. What does your skin look like after a bath, are the patches quite vivid? Is yours very itchy? Mine wasn't earlier on when I had it but the last month or so it has been very.
I hate to say it but it does seem to start small in other areas.
I am still looking for answers. I am going to the doctor again this week.
Some people use a baby powder to help keep their skin dry, but it can irritate some peoples skin. I think the nail polish thing might be for people with nail fungus and I think it is a bit debateable, but I haven't tried it so cant say. Is your skin dry too? I mean its complicated as my skin gets quite dry and I want to moisturise but at the same time am wary as I don't want to make the fungus worse, but when its dry I think it aggravates the itching!!
Keep in touch, we can give each other info on what we find helps and what doesn't.

tea tree oil,
i think it would be worth a try.
i have read that it can be used to treat fungal infections such as ringworm and athletes foot. you can buy it at any store on the vitamin asile.
it has been great for us. someone told me about it and how great it worked and i though they were exagerating. on the bottle, it says for bites, stings, cuts, sunburns, etc. my son is very allergic to ant bites. to the point were once he got 4 bites and i had to take him to the emergency room. i had tried everything under the sun and was then told about tea tree oil. i thought what the heck, so one day after he was bitten by an ant, i imediately put tea tree oil on it, and to my suprise, it never made more than a little red spot, not even a little swollen or anything, so i am sold. we carry a bottle any time we will be outside. my husband and myself use it as well on any type of bite or sting. it is great. i recently got a lotion that contains tea tree oil, and it is suppose to be great for eczema, so i am going to try it for my other son.
i know this story had nothing to do with ringworm, but just how great we have found tea tree oil to be. i think it would be very much worth a try. research the internet for tea tree oil. it is amazing what all it says it can treat, even gargling it with water for a sore throat, anything.
good luck and hope you find a cure.

Monkeyboots,
Well I only really have one patch at the moment & a few itchy bumps popping up in other areas. It is incredibly itchy after bathing or just getting it wet in general. I am going to try washing it with Selsun Blue shampoo, it is for dandruff & apparently helpful for ringworm aswell. It gets really red & uncomfortable when wet. I have been avoiding getting the area wet by wrapping it in plastic wrap during showers. The area of skin where the ringworm patch is, is very dry & I do not use any kind of lotions on it other then Lamisil.
After reading some "home remedies" on the net I decided to try the nail polish suggestions (I am desperate). On other message boards lots of ppl have said that it has worked for them. I covered the area in nail polish (it stings) and I'll take it off in the morning to see if there is any improvement (doubtful). I might try vinegar or salt which are supposed to dry the area up, ringworm thrives on moisture. I haven't seen any improvement with the Lamisil cream, and I am soooo desperate for a solution befor it starts spreading all over.
I also read that diluted bleach works but I am a bit worried about putting bleach on my skin.
Have you tried anything other then the meds/creams perscribed by the doctor?
I'll keep you updated & let you know if any of these home remedies work!
Lovemybabyboys,
I have heard good things about tea tree oil, I think i'll pick some up at the drug store! It can't hurt to try & it sounds much more reasonable then nail polish!

Hi D3sire, and Love,
Hi love, Have tried tea tree, but my skin is extremely sensitive at the mo and everything seems to irritate it, but might give it another go. I also have bought the organic apple cider vinegar to try but it is rather stinky!!
I read that about the diluted bleach too D3sire I suppose bleach kills most things off but I would imagine very risky on the skin especially if sensitive already.
Let me know how the nail varnish goes!
Manuka honey is supposed to be great for certain skin conditions too it also has anti fungal properties and anti this and that, some mrsa patients used it and it helped them. Havent tried that on ringworm though.
Best wishes

Well the nail polish didn't seem to work, and it was a pain trying to get it all off. I picked up Hydrogen Peroxide @ the drugstore today, It stings quit a bit & itches after I put it on, but maybe thats a good thing? Someone suggested using heat to get rid of it, either going out into the sun or using a blow dryer. I think I'll keep trying the peroxide & see how that goes.

It took me almost 6 weeks to clear up ringworm. I had three different scripts because some are more effective for the particular strain than others. Be very careful, it does spread easily. I had it under a breast. Try to shower and not bath. Wash the area with the breakout last. Then put the wash cloth in the laundry. Do the same with towels. Don't let other family members use the same linens. It is highly contageous. Don't wear the same clothing twice. Be sure to change pajamas daily. You can reinfect yourself. Be deligent...it will go away. Here is another strange thing. A nurse told me, dandruff shampoo helps problem areas with skin pigments. My son has trouble on the side of his neck. He has a dandruff shampoo in the shower for just that purpose and it gets his skin back to a nearly normal appearance. It works...I don't know why.

good advice hovan,
unfortunately with me it is all over my arms and quite a lot on my legs, so when I wash I am washing my hands after I touch each area, if it was a small area I could manage it better. I wonder if there is a spray wash so I don't even need to touch my skin at all! Its awful. I feel obsessional but obviously need to be!
I am frustrated as on the lamisil tablets it seems to have got worse! You said certain medicines are better for certain strains, what did you find helped. I have had this ages as at first I didn't know what it was, so unfortunately it got bad before I started treating it correctly. Quite a lot of mine doesn't look like typical ringworm until after bathing when it shows up vividly.

I think the hydrogren peroxide is helping a bit, it stings like crazy but the ring around my ringworm seems to be getting faint. Monkeyboots, I apply my cream with a q-tip, I really try to avoid touching it with my fingers. It sounds like your problem is a bit more severe though. Maybe you could apply it with cotton balls? or dry make-up remover pads?

The best med for me was clotrimazole and betamethasone dipropionate. Boy that is a mouth full. My nephew had a problem he cleared up with over the counter tenactin. A spray may help you because it would cover such a large area...good luck

Well, usually the Skin Problem has proved to be too tricky & it has always created much troubles & tortures for the Patients.
The fact is Each skin rash has so many complicated symptons & sufferings that the Problem & understanding the root cause as well as right treatment is either confused or lost or experimented.
Either People are not interested to listen about your Skin Problems or they pass on the Buck by advising to go for Skin Specialists. Again in stead of right treatment, either you are put to experimental treatments or asked to go for a Number of tests. Both the way If you are lucky you are geting some relief for sheer coincidence that experiments & disease were matching.
Its a fact that 85 % of Skin Problems are manifestation of some or the other Allergy, 5 % are due to Fungus & remaining could be any thing. So better get the Allergy treatment with Anti fungus topical & Oral Medicines - Sporanox Capsules.
Selun Shamoo or any Shampoo with 2.5 % Selenium Sulphide, puting all over body can prove to be good Anti fungul treatment if continued for 4 weeks.
Any good Anti Hitamines or Anti Allergy Medicines are also worth taking to see you have treated the Allergy, While most important is One must find out about the particular thing that each respective patient might have been allergic to. Unless one avoids the Allergen, he would continue to suffer.
Plus, One must take some Vitamin C rich Fruits & Vegetables, Anti Oxidents like Orange Juice, Some Garlic & other natural foods rich in Vitamins & Minerals, while keeping care of cleanliness & hygin of body.
I do wish relief to all, suffering from Skin Problems ( A whole lot suffers ) & like them to be with healthier smiles. Just "Takecare"

I had it once and it does spread quickly so you need to get treatment right away. I put the cream on it twice a day every day for four weeks and then it came BACK a week later! So I did it again and kept putting it on for two months and it finally never came back. It's hard to get rid of for good.

Hi all,
How are you getting on D3sire? Is the ringworm still a problem or has it cleared?
Thanks for the advice Takecare, Hovan.
What is the betamethasone stuff hovan? Haven't heard of that.. Is it an anti-fungal. I've still got this problem, its very stubborn on me, if that is what it is. The latest is my doctor thinks it is Pityriasis versicolor, but I don't think it looks like that from the pictures I've seen. Anyway I'll know for sure in December when I see the Derm.
Good to hear from you too VegasGirl. Its good to hear from others who have suffered with this horrible stubborn skin problem.
My doctor has now taken me off Lamisil as I had been on the tablets 6 weeks without any obvious improvement. I've also been taken off using the Nizoral shampoo as that really irritated my skin. I have been prescribed Selsun to try now. I have bought myself an over the counter anti-fungal Daktarin, it seems fairly good so far. We'll see.. I have pictures of my skin prob in Skincell forum under Tinea.
Take care all.

My original patch has pretty much cleared up but I have maybe 4 other smaller areas that I am trying to get rid of, it's seriously feels like it will NEVER go away:mad: I am using Selsun Blue shampoo, lamisil cream & ocassionaly hydrogen peroxide. It has been about a month & half now with little improvement.
ETA: I looked at your pics, mine looks nothing like that. I have one round patch on my forearm & 4 or 5 smaller areas that are all circular and they look rough & have started to scab. Yours looks more like a skin rash to me, I am sure that you have been diagnosed by a doctor though. It is odd to me how the same problem can look so different. Did yours start out w/ a few patches?

Hi D3sire,
Mine is odd, it certainly doesn't seem to fit neatly into any category. Doctors now think it is most likely Pityriasis Versicolor but I've seen pics for that and it looks nothing like that either. I am seeing the derm in Dec I hope that he will know for sure!
Do you scratch yours D3sire or do they naturally scab? Mine get very dry and flaky on top some of them pics didn't really show very well. At the moment my skin is unbearably dry from all the things I put on it, is your skin coping with the treatment.
I have a few fresher patches on my legs a couple look more like typical ringworm with a slightly darker pink raised border and paler in the middle.
I hate this thing it is so determined!!
The fact you have not too many patches I would imagine you stand a good chance of treating it. Have you considered the tablet option? I know its not the best thing, but it works for some.
I was on it 6 wks and I only noticed a slight difference on the first few days then my skin seemed worse. However my skin doesn't seem like other peoples so don't be disheartened, tablets are supposed to clear up more resistant cases.
Take care,

I try not to scratch them but I have woken up to myself scratching like crazy a few times. My skin it coping fine w/the treatment, it isn't sensitive or anything. It looks like typical ringworm. I am hoping that they will clear w/time & the fact that my original area is 90% gone gives me some hope. I might try the tablets if it's not gone within a month or so.
From your pics & what you have said I think you might have more then ring worm, the fact that your skin is so sensitive to treatment sounds like maybe there is something else? Good luck w/the derm, I am sure he/she will be able to give you more insight into your problem. Wo knows, maybe there is a simple treatment for your condition that you just haven't found yet!

Just a note, have your doctor check to see if it is excema. My daughter's rash is raised, red, itchy, round in shape, extremely red after bathing, and is spreading. We originally thought it was ringworm, and the lamisil helped a little bit, but not for long. According to like 5 doctors it is definitley excema. I'm going to be begging for a dermatologist apt., and maybe they will tell me more, and maybe there is a test they can do to tell me exactly what kind of excema it is.

d3sire - I was reading on your board about ringworm. I am going to derm next week but in the mean time i'd like to know how the hydrogen peroxide worked? i first developed a round red patch 3 months ago and thought it was a reaction to a bug bite- it didnt go away after a while and grew...and as soon as I started working out more and it got hot it spread. The worst is on the side of my jawline. I tried Lamasil, didnt work...Selsum Blue and it kind of did but after a week it wasnt feeling like it was doing much. I have started using hydrogen peroxide the last 3 days 3 times a week. It blubbles like crazy (each time a little less i guess)...it itches like crazy right after. I want to know if this method worked for you? and if so, how long did it take to get rid of it? please help with any information you may have!! it looks horrible on my face!!!
thanks,

Hey guys,
glad i found this thread!!
I am also having a VERY DIFFICULT ringworm problem.
I have seen a doctor, went through two tubes of Econazaole, and am now taking 100mg of Sporonax (itraconazole).
If anytihng, the medications seem to be ANGERING my ringworm. It started on the back of my right leg. After 2-3 weeks it spread to my left leg. Then it seemed to be dormant for 1-2 weeks as the first two infections healed.
NOW, i have it on my right upper arm in three places, on my left wrist, and there are spots appearing on my arms and upper torso/shoulders.
I would be happy to post some photos of my rash if anyone is interested. I HAVE been to a doctor and he seems very confident that it is all tinea.
But the creams dont seem to be working. The itching is driving me so crazy that I tried the diluted bleach. The first dilution was obviously too strong as it scabbed my "Test area".. and it hurt. Sorta ilke a chemical burn.
But I diluted it again 50:50 .. now it smells more like a chlorinated pool. I use it in the morning when the itching is very bad, then dry myself with a hair drier, apply my cream, and pop the sporanox pill.
I am still waiting for improvement ....... I am hoping its going to stop spreading!
Will be washing my bedding and wiping down all areas that I come into contact with in my home, car, and at work with the bleach dilution.
Also .. I read that pets can be an incognitio carrier for ringworm. Does anyone else suffering from recurring/spreading tinea have cats or dogs?
RINGWORM SUCKS!!!

This is EXACTLY what was happening to me just recently while I was taking Lamisil pills and using Lamisil cream, and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and why my ringworm wouldn't go away. After finally obtaining a dermatology appointment after the rash/open sore on my arm got to be about 3.5 inches long by 2.5 inches wide and I was breaking out with those small little tiny red bumps all over my body, the dermatologist couldn't figure out what was wrong with me at first until she brought in 2 other doctors for additional opinions. After the head dermatologist came in, he recognized my condition right away as "hypo-dermatitis", which is basically your skin reacting very violently due to some sort of allergy or whatnot. Turns out that the reason why my "ringworm" would never heal was because I actually had a skin rash that looked very similar to ringworm (two doctors prior to my dermatology appointments told me it was ringworm) and that I was allergic to Lamisil!!! By putting more lamisil cream on me and taking lamisil pills I was literally destroying my skin! It still hasn't fully healed (Only been three days since I've stopped taking the lamisil) but it's already improved a good amount, although the small red bumps haven't gone away yet and I've still been getting some swelling. Well, I hope this helps someone out, be sure that when you see a dermatologist if you have similar symptoms to see if you're allergic to Lamisil.

To those who posted in Aug 08,
I hope by now your ringworm is gone. For me the Hydrogen Peroxide did work. The Lamisil cream didn't help much & might have made it worse. Once I started using the Hydrogen Peroxide my main patch cleared up within a week. It itched & burned slightly when I applied the Peroxide but it did manage to dry up and kill the ringworm. I used a cotton swab to apply a small amount of Peroxide, then I wrapped the area in saran wrap. The smaller patches I had, I didn't treat. They never got any bigger then a dime and seemed to just scab over & disappear on their own.

I am thinking that this might have been what I had. I was using Lamisil for over a month with no improvement. It wasn't until I started with the Hydrogen Peroxide that it cleared up. Thanks for posting this!!

If you start with a "mother" patch that looks like 'ringworm' and then spreads to tiny itchy red bumps it is probably pityriasis rosea. A common skin disease that cant be treated but eventually goes away. You can soothe the itching with caladryl clear lotion (not calamine since it dries and irriates the rash) and exposure to sunlight.
I hope this helps some of you! I had this and most doctors misdiagnosed me which was really frustrating.
