My daughter was diagnosed in May with type 1. She is 11 years old (12 next week) She is currently in her honeymoon period so is only using insulatard twice a day with no fast acting insulin. Yesterday her blood sugar readings went up to 20.6 though dropped overnight to 5.3 then up again at lunch time to 17.9 and back this evening to 6.4 even though she only ate the usual sort of things nothing which I would class as naughty. The only difference yesterday was she had quite a few sugar free chewing gums. Can the sweeteners affect her blood sugars or is it only real sugar that is a problem. I've often felt that cremosa lollies which are also sugar free seem to affect her a bit but I'm not sure.
Does the honeymoon period end abruptly or will she have peaks like this for a while first?

Honeymoon period can end very slowly. The better control you have over blood sugars during the honeymoon, the more likely it is to last for awhile.

Following on from this comment, those BG peaks will be stressing the beta cells and shortening their remaining useful life. Dumping Insulatard and taking Humalog/Novolog before meals would be far more effective in easing the strain on the beta cells and prolonging the honeymoon stage.
The increased peaking of BG after meals illustrates that mealtimes is where additional insulin is needed the most. And the effect is likely to become increasingly pronounced as more beta cells die off. You will need to change to a basal/bolus regimen sooner or later anyway.

I agree completely Mark. When I was first diagnosed I took R for corrections only- maybe once or twice a day. That lasted about a week before I realized I was correcting after every meal, so I just started taking it with the meal. I got by on that for 2 whole months before I required basal insulin. I started Lantus then and did that for 2 weeks before I went on a pump. I think my tight control during this time has done a lot to prolong my honeymoon and relax my beta cells.
