Hi,

5 years ago I had a severe ingrowing toenail on my left foot (big toe) and I had this surgically removed. My nail grew back after about a year but it never looked right to me. Anyway, last night I was in the bathroom and I gently touched the corner of my nail with my finger and thought "I'll give you a trim" and next thing I know my toe nail completely comes off without me touching it.

Its weird. There is nothing there now. Just a square shape where my nail should be and what looks like a bit of dry skin. My toe keeps going purple up the top too and its freezing cold. Both Feet are.

What do I have to do about my nail? Its sore a bit but isn't bleeding. Looks like the nail just dropped off....like it died or somethng.

Thanks.

The nail bed has most likely been damaged.

Oh. Is there anything I can do to fix the nail bed and make it grow back? Looks really weird.

Not that I am aware of.

your best bet might be to ask a doctor about it. If your foot is going purple then you might have circulation problems in your feet.. and that's probably not helping the nail grow back properly. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a serious health problem, but the doctor might know for sure what is going on and how to help it grow back properly.

I had to have 4 ingrown toenails done at once...my tootsies grow funny. But, the doc put in a q-tip with a type of acid on it to ensure that that part of my nail did not grow back and cause anymore problems. I'm just guessing here...but maybe the doc did the same to you and the acid somehow killed the whole nail bed. Do you think that's possible? It would make sense for it to take this long, since when people take meds for fungus that it takes at least 6 months to see a change. It may have gradually disolved the nail root so the entire nail just came off.

Does that sound like it may fit your situation? Otherwise, I'm unsure of how to explain the fact that it caused so little pain. If the root were still in tact, I assume it would have hurt like...well, you know. I'm sure you've stubbed your toe on more than one occasion.

Hope this helps. I would suggest you call your podiatrist and ask them. If the bed was killed, I doubt it would grow back. I have a friend w/ a toe nail missing, she cracks me up, she paints the skin and unless you look hard, you have no idea she's missing a nail.

Good luck!

'Blue' nails, whether on the fingers or toes, is a sign of poor circulation. The fact that you are saying your toes are cold is another sign of poor circulation. You need to see your doctor right away. Poor circulation in these extremeties can not only cause nail plate loss, but the loss of the finger or toe in extreme situations.

Our nails are the mirror to our inner health and your nails are showing you that you have something wrong and it isn't only the loss of the one nail. What you are seeing as dry skin under the nail is actually the nail bed upon which the nail plate used to be attached. If it is dry, it means that the nail had been loose for quite some time and the nail bed has turned into 'skin' just like the rest of your skin. In order for a new nail to grow back the matrix has to still be intact and producing new nail plate cells.

Please see your physician - this is nothing to put off!

Hi everyone :)

Sorry I'm only replying now. Been having one of them weeks. I wasn't told anything about any acid but it would make sense if they killed my nail bed off. I think I'll paint my nail bed lol.

I'm seeing my GP tomorrow about some symptoms that have been going on and about the circulation problem and the referral for toe op. I'll get it all sorted at once if she'll listen long enough lol.

Thanks again x
