dinkey 10-09-2006, 07:23 AM I just found that I have high blood pressure does this mean I could be a diabetic as well? Coravh 10-09-2006, 11:36 AM People with diabetes often have high blood pressure due to cardiac or kidney complications. High bp does not cause diabetes (although it can cause kidney problems). If diabetes runs in your family, however, I would get myself checked. Cora SamQKitty 10-09-2006, 11:55 AM It's quite common for people to develop high blood pressure as they age. Older arteries and veins are not quite as elastic, plus plaque can build up which slightly narrows the arteries. However, if blood pressure becomes high in a younger person (say, under 35), studies should be done to make sure the kidneys and renal arteries are okay. The kidneys help regulate blood pressure, and certain types of kidney problems, or renal artery problems, can also cause high blood pressure. I definitely wouldn't assume that diabetes is causing your high blood pressure. If you've also had blood drawn at your checkups, they most likely would have discovered it already if you were developing Type 2 diabetes. Ruth dinkey 10-09-2006, 01:04 PM Thank you for you answers I am 30 and I do have problems with kidney infects. SamQKitty 10-10-2006, 12:37 AM Dinky, Chronic kidney infections could have caused some damage to the kidneys. Given your age, which is quite young to have developed what they call "benign essential hypertension" (that's the kind you get as you get older), you might want to have a thorough workup by a good nephrologist just to be on the safe side.
