Hey everyone,
I have a surgery scheduled for this week and i was just curious for some input from anyone who has had foot surgery. I am getting a moderate bunion corrected and i am also getting the hammer toe on both of my second digits corrected. How long would something like that really take to heal? Two hammer toes and a bunion? My doctor says like a week of laying in bed foot propped and after that i can walk...somehow im skeptical b/c it seems there's no way i'll be walking after a week. Correct me if i'm wrong tho. thanks alot.:)

I can't comment too much on the particular surgery that you're having, but regarding being able to walk that soon afterwards - you'd be surprised how quickly you improve! If your doctor says you should be okay, the chances are that you will be.
I had ankle surgery and I could walk on it 2 days afterwards. It varies a lot from person to person, but obviously most people can walk after a week or so.

Well, I had a bunionectomy three weeks ago and I am still in a cast and can not walk on it. In fact, my doctor wants me to be in a cast for three more weeks and not to walk on it (use crutches, walker, wheelchair). What I am finding on this message board is that every doctor's orders are different. Good luck with your surgery and keep us posted on your recovery.

I had surgery on my foot less than a week ago. I had a Toe broken in two places and hammer toe repair on three others. I too am wearing a cast but I have managed to get around a little. Each person heals at a different rate some faster, some slower. The best advice I can give is to rest, elevate and ice as much as possible and follow your doctors directions he will know what is best for you.
Hope your surgery goes well and that you are soon better and up and around!
Hope this helps!

Thank you everyone. that's true that everyone is different and healing will take different amounts of time in everyone. I guess i should just wait and see. I think she thinks i will heal pretty fast because i am still young. Hopefully that is the case. :p I will let everyone know how it goes.

Don't be nervous, you will do fine. I had bunion surgery on July 21, 2006. My big toe had moved almost out of the socket so the bunion had to be removed, the toe put back into socket and two pins put in. I only walked to the bethroom the first 3 days with my surgical shoe which I did not remove for a week. The rest of the time I kept the foot elevated, ice packs on it over the shoe all the time. The only time I removed the ice was to walk. By the 3rd day, I walked more, it is awkward and you have to get off it and keep the ice on it but my foot is doing great now. Stay off of it as much as you can for the first two weeks. I think that was the best thing I did although my family was not so happy and my house was a disaster but now I am glad. I was in sneakesr by the third week with a compression sock. My doctor said I have healed well and the scar is diminishing. He said it will be completely back to normal in about 6 to 8 more months but I am so glad I did this. Good Luck!
Being nervous is normal....I was having panic attacks before each of my three week apart surgeries and my feet were HORRIBLE. Huge bunions and all the toes overlapped. Ended up with long pins in each toe and several screws in each foot. I was very worried about the healing as I am 64 years old, no spring chicken. Able to walk from the get-go in surgical boots though I did as little as possible and essentially lived under house arrest for the first two months, to give my feet as much rest as possible. Now I am walking around in surgical sandals. Still get sore if I push it too much, but my feet tell me when I am overdoing things. If I had to make the decision over again, knowing what I know now, I would have the surgery in a heartbeat and not be so anxious about it!
