I had a colonoscopy yesterday and had 1 small polyp removed. I think the dr. said it was .5 cm. He sent it to pathology. My question is, if it was cancerous, would the dr. be able to tell just by seeing it? He didn't seem concerned at all and didn't even schedule a follow-up a appt. I know they must send it to pathology to determine if its pre-cancerous or hyperplastic (sp?), but do polyps sometimes come back as cancerous too, even when the dr. thinks they are not? I'm just a little worried. Thanks for your help.

Even if the polyp was PRE-CANCEROUS, then there is still NO NEED to worry. The polyp was removed, so you really don't have anything to worry about. It is true that SOMETIMES the GI can tell if the polyp is suspicious looking, but you really need to wait for the path report to confirm whether the polyp HAD the potential to turn into a cancerous tumor/lesion. However, it won't make a difference, execpt, you will need to have follow-up colonoscopies more frequently. THAT'S IT! You are in the clear!
I'm glad you got such good news!:)
