My PM Doctor just switched today from 120mg of oxycontin to Kadian along with percocet for BT pain. I am on 100mg 2X daily, so 200mg total.

Is anyone else on this? If so can you give me the pros or cons about it. So far after my first pill I feel good with no pain. :)

Thanks,

Gabe :D

Kadian is the smoothest sustained relief morphine.

If you compare Kadian,Avinza, and MS Contin you will notice Kadian maintains the steadiest blood level and very little peaks and dips over a
12 hour period.

Im taking MSC now,my doc wanted to switch me to Kadian but it is not a "preffered med" on my insurance plan so it would cost me $50 instead of $10.

I didnt want to switch to Avinza because its a once a day med and I prefer MSC 3 times a day.
I feel like i have more control over my pain with TID dosing.

The only complaint i have about morphine is the constipation and sweating.

Hey scotty,

Thanks for the information! This is the first for me on morphine and it sounds like Kadian is one of the best morphine meds. I'm glad my PM doctor put me on this because I can already feel the good effects and I've only taken one pill. ;)

It sounds like you are doing good on MSC. I know we are all different and some meds work better with some people and others it doesn't.

But thank you for the thumbs up on Kadian. :D

I first started with 60mg of Avinza Q24 but the meds always petered out before I was due for the next dose. I was then switched to 30mg q12 of Kadian but that dose wasn't cutting it, I was using all my bt meds. My doc then uped me to 90mg of Avinza Q24 and cut my bt meds in half. However after two months I couln't sleep well without taking bt meds because the dose of Avinza started to wear off at the 18th hour. It was like clockwork. Again I was using most of my bt meds. So a few days ago the PA at my PM clinic switched me back to Kadian 50mg Q12. So far so good, it realy seems to be consistant. I hope I can stay at this level for a while without having to increase.

I've only began PM seven months ago. We've been taking our time with each adjustment so as not to overmedicate.

I was suprised to find that the Q12 dosing gave me a 40% discount off my copay. I figured since I was perscribe twice as many pills I would be charged twice as much and as you know these meds are pricey.

Kadian was a godsend for me ,You will find more relief as you are on it longer.Dont forget to take it!!Missing one dose can throw you into a spiral of pain!!The only problem is the constipation my dr suggested Senna it is a natural laxative=it works.Good luck to you!!!

I agree, the constipation is irritating but managable as long as you keep ahead of it. My doc writes me a script for Miralax. It's a stool'softener type of powder that works great. I never anticipated constipation but the narcotics slow down your bowels making the stool stay in the colon longer. Your colon absorbs fluid from your future poop, so obviously if it stays in the colon longer it gets drier, harder and denser which will definitly cause a traffic jam. I don't mean to grose anyone out but if you don't drop the kids off at the pool every few days you can run into some serious problems. But if you use the wrong methods to clear your roads you can make your guts dependent on certian methods. I'm refering to those who abuse laxatives because of the feeling of needing to evacuate every day or multiple times a day. In some cases this can be worse than being compacted:(

I agree with the fact that Kadian in very controlled release. It took me a few days to get used to it. Also one plus is if you qualify for their income guidelines, you can get your meds for $5 a month.

Please read the Posting Rules that explain you may not direct members to do searches.

I tried Kadian and it did nothing for me. Of course, the 100 mcg patch does nothing fopr me either.

Everyone is different, so perhaps Kadian will work for you.

One thing to consider is that unlike Kadian, Avinza releases some morhpine immediately.

Good Luck!

Alan
