Hi Liz,
Thanks for checking in. I guess I am not on the boards as much since I got a part time job (yeah!). I have xrays tomorrow (7 months post op) and I have an appt with my surgeon Friday. I know that my foot is fused, but he just mentioned something about the bone needing to fill in. At my last appt he told me to wear the boot half the day and a sneaker the other half. I really dont have pain at all in the boot, but walking with the sneaker is painful. Pt is going well and I try to swim, swim, swim!
Now that my midfoot is fused, I have this weird sensation of feeling bones in my foot move as I walk. This probably sounds crazy but thats the best way to describe it. I am really starting to feel the screws but will probably wait until next summer to have them removed...
How are you doing?

Hey Liz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was wondering how you've been! So, are you at 100% now?
I will be having surgery in 3 weeks. I went to a new doctor and he said that the big toe sitting on top of my 2nd toe has really displaced that toe. The adhesions are severe and the big toe does not allow me to walk anything but flat footed. He told me that my fusion is still fusing and that most of the time it will continue to fuse up to a year. He will be doing an Aiken procedure (I believe) to the big toe. He told me that he may have to remove a screw from the plate to allow the surgery to proceed. He wants to move that toe over and then also try and fix my 2nd toe. I'm not sure what he will do to my second toe. He said that this being my 4th surgery on that toe that I may lose circulation to that toe. He wants me to stay overnight in the hospital this time. Hopefully the circulation won't be a problem (It has the other 3 times because it turns blue/black and stays that way for awhile) because the end result is that I could lose the toe. I am still wearing my camboot. No sense trying to get my foot in the shoe. It's not fun wearing one for this long but....at least I'm off crutches for now. I will be NWB again but I'm not sure how long. I will know nothing until after the surgery or even after the first post op check. My surgery will be on Halloween Day. Maybe everybody will dress up! How fitting and ghoulish would that be!
Hope to hear how everyone else is doing also. I will keep everyone posted as my surgery day approaches.

Hi Gang...Liz, You asked but you didn't say how you were doing! Are you in shoes and comfortable...no pain...what kind of shoes?
I was waiting and hoping to post when everything is good but since you asked....The fusion foot is coming along. The joint is still partially visible but I am wearing a shoe half time and the boot half time. At my last check, the doctor said the joint was warm meaning there was STILL inflammation there but he said we don't have to talk revision just yet. It is still extremely sore to walk on!This one is 14 weeks and counting....The 5th met fracture on the other foot is STILL casted. (10 weeks) I have 2 more weeks and HOPEFULLY then the xrays will show healing! I am just hoping that since I don't have a good foot to stand on ......is why this is taking such a long time. I'm still using the wheelchair a good portion of the time and when I do walk it's SLOWLY and awkwardly!! Still I have faith that I will be walking the dog soon!;) I guess the good news is that I haven't spent ANY money on shoes in a long time!

Hi everyone!
Diane~ I am glad to hear you have made so much progress!!! It must feel weird having a good portion of your foot fused...just having the toe done is a little weird :jester:
Janie~ Hey!!! I really hope everything goes well for you this time, your doctor seems much better than the last. That would be funny if they all dressed on Halloween...too bad you can't dress up for your surgery! Good luck and keep us updated. :blob_fire
Sophie~ You are almost there girl! I know it must feel like an eternity, but it will be over soon. Thats great that you are in a shoe for a least some of the day, that is great progress :) Just becareful and let us know what happens!
So, now for me.... ;)
I am walking in a shoe (the same shoe...I havent been able to get in to too much more) for the whole day now. My foot def. swells still, but I am sure that will happen for awhile to come. I don't really have any pain when I walk anymore; yesterday was a little painful, but it was cold and rained all day, so I think that may have had something to do with that. I started PT about 2 or 3 weeks ago, because my ankle was so stiff and it seems to really be helping with my ankle, gait, and balance. I still can't raise up on just the left foot (mtp fusion toe foot) but am trying everyday. I'm also thinking about investing in a gym membership to build my calf muscle back up because my left calf looks very funny compared to my right...I never knew what great calf muscles I had! :D Anyway, that is basically my progress thus far. It has been a little slow, but I am making progress :)
It was great to hear how everyone is doing!!!

I haven't gone to the Healthboards in a while. I am having a fusion of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal of the right foot next week, and am quite nervous. What can I expect as far as range of motion after surgery? How risky is this type of fusion? Will I be non-weight bearing for a long time? I have a job that requires me to drive, and hop in and out of the car many times a day. I know I won't be able to resume this for several weeks. Can you tell me any experiences any of you have had. Thank you very much, Gail
