I have found certain spots on my legs and lower stomach area that have a lot less feeling for the needle. Also, I got some 31 guage needles and they are NICE. Very very thin and comfortable. At first I had 29 guage and they did hurt sometimes even when I was careful.
Sometimes what I do is kind of scratch with my fingers over my leg and you can get a feel for where your nerves "feel" more. Also, after swabbing when I grabbed a piece of skin, I kind of poke around the area real gently to find the best spot where I have the least sensation of touch from the needle. And if you use the tiny 31 guage needles, you can most of the time, not feel it AT ALL!
Good luck! Don't give up.

there is a part right above my rear that seems kinda like fat, but i cant really pinch too much out...
can my doctor help me find a place that doesnt hurt or is that just trial and error?
also i read that alcohol swabs can cause the stinging, do i need them?

Hi guys [removed]. Yes you do need to use the alcohol swabs; just make sure that you are letting the alcohol dry prior to the injection or you will get stinging. You're best bet is the stomach area; less nerves. Just make sure that you are injecting the medication SLOWLY... that will help prevent stinging. Also I'm sure that you have been told--make sure that you are selecting different sites at all times! Hope that helps.

Well, unless you are very very very low body fat percentage, you have some fat somewhere. If you can pinch up some skin there's some fat underneath it. The more you can pinch the thicker it is. Of course I've got a few extra pounds on me, a thinner person has got to look around more. I use the area around my belly and the tops of my legs. It might not look like it but there is usually some nice thick fat there.
Another technique I use is when I'm ready to inject I kind of breathe in deep, and breathe out slow saying "one two three" and push it in. I think it helps to calm yourself when your anxious about the needle.
I'm only in my third week as Type 1 so this is all still pretty newish to me, these are all tricks I've been using to help myself, the first time I tried to inject my hand was shaking so much I couldn't even do it!
Oh and one more thing, if you're not using them, get some short needles, they have 5/16th inch they don't go in as far as the 1/2 inch, good for thin people!

For me, the 1" stripe extending across my abdomen just above the intersection of my legs and pubic region is pretty insensitive. There are a few selected spots that give me a little sting, but by and large, I don't feel
anything at all.

:) You said that you do it slowly. That is your problem. I have diabetes2 and I do it quikly. If you have diabetes1, then ask your doctor how to take the sting out of the injections.

If it is inconsistent, you are probably snagging a nerve on the way in. Are you using sure your needle is sharp?

I strongly disagree with the 'quick jab' approach for exactly this reason. If you go really slow, then you can feel extra resistance and pain if you chose an 'unlucky' spot and are pushing through a blood vessel.
You should have been going slow enough to feel the unusual resistance and pain, and pulled out right away, switched to another spot entirely. Sorry for your pain and tissue damage!
If you've got REALLY bad pain problems and insurance pays for the insulin and needles, you might even give up on that needle-- get a new one, redraw the insulin so that you aren't re-using the same needle tip for another time. They damage quickly, especially the BD 31-gage needles do not hold up for repeated punctures.

And you are using the BD 31 gage needles, RIGHT?
They're WAY more gentle than the 29 gage ones.

god it hurt again, im going in decisively, and it just stings the w hole way through, and this time a large amount of insulin was on my stomach, maybe all of it. are the legs less painful? also i heard that right below the belly button,a nd above the pubic area is also painless.
i want to hear where u guys do it with the most success...
i cant take this anymore...

This area is painless for me. The upper part of my legs give me a little sting, but not too bad. The rear of my arms is painless when someone else injects me, but I can't manage to do it myself. I use 29 gauge needles on disposable syringes, it does help to have these sharp. The ones from BD are better than the Kendall, but Kendalls are cheaper.

For injections I prefer upper legs (quad muscles) to abdomen, even though I always put my infusion sets are on my abdomen (to avoid having tubing pulled around by pants).
