Hi, I'm Mindy and I was recently diagnosed T2. I start Metformin today 500mg in the morning. My BS's are fine after meals, but my fasting is normally around 130-140. My A1C was 7.2. Before I found out about it I was eating everything sugary in sight. I had gestational diabetes with my son (3.5 months) and after he was born I went on overload. My Dr diagnosed me according to my A1C test alone. Is there another test I should have too? Thanks
Mindy

I don't think so. The HbA1C test is the most credible evidence and is the better long-term indicator of your sugars. This 7.2 result looks as if it is not of a period in which you had average BS of 130-140, but rather higher. The most significant contribution to HbA1C is in the 6-week period prior to the test, and extending with
less effect toward the result back toward 3 months prior to the test.
I don't think your doctor made this diagnosis based on this test result alone. He also had your history in view.
The "fasting" blood sugar can look a few points higher than the daily average if you take it immediately after sleep. This is because the liver glucose output rises during sleep. Take your metformin with food, for the best results.
Hopefully, you will get another HbA1C test about 3 months down the road. If your experience follows mine (over the last 15 years or so) you will find the HbA1C to very closely follow your 30-day average BS.
I think you will also find that your FBS readings slowly normalize downward as you have reduced your intake and the metformin has a few days to work. If I allow my diet to get wacky, it takes about a week for things to settle down, for me.
