When my acid reflux is acting up my throat really tightens up and it feels so difficult to swallow anything, even water.
I can't stand anything touching my neck, even my shirt collar drives me insane and makes the tightening feeling worse.
My stomach always feels like its on fire inside. I don't have the liquid feeling coming up into my throat or I even know a few people who have the reflux or GERD so bad that acid comes up their throat and out of their nose sometimes.
I don't have it that bad.
But my stomach is always so raw, bloated feeling and it burns constantly.
My doctor prescribed me Prevacid.
I have been dealing with theses symptoms for about 2 years now and I'm scared that I have done irreversible damage to my esophagus that now Prevacid won't help.
Is anyone else on Prevacid? I have 30 mg capsules. I have trouble swallowing anything so am I allowed to break apart the capsules and just take the tiny beads inside or can I mix it with something light like pudding or something and take it that way?
Has anyone ever had a bad allergic reaction to Prevacid or did it make your symptoms worse?
Please post someone! Let me know!
Thanks.

Well I know with any kind of medicine such as prevacid. You are suppose to swallow whole. If you break it up and swallow it like that then it won't work. I know you are having trouble swallowing but at least try to take it whole and see if it makes you feel better.

Prevacid comes in a tablet that dissolves in your mouth and it even comes in liquid form. Ask your doc to see if he/she can prescribe one of the alternate forms

I am going through the exact same thing as you with swallowing. I had scope done and they could not find anything wrong. I feel the food slide down my throat and its all very frustrating that they say there is nothing there.

What else could cause these symptoms....I am really frustrated

Also Hamilton what was your diagnosis

I haven't been diagnosed with anything yet related to why my throat feels this way. I do have mild colitis, heartburn but I don't get the acid feeling coming up in my throat like severe GERD or acid reflux symptoms. I may have a problem with my gallbladder. On an ultrasound it couldn't be seen, my doctor said it was probably contracted up under my liver or I was born without one. Well on a hida scan I found out I do have one and it was filling up too slowly.
Does gallbladder problems cause any of these or similar symptoms? I don't get the classic gallbladder pain either. Just burning, churning, raw and gritty feeling all over my stomach.
Sometimes right in the belly button area, around that area of my stomach gets really tender and sore to the touch though.
Why does my throat feel this way? I haven't eaten a normal meal in 2 years.
I am scared, I don't want to die. I need answers!
I called and talked to the office manager at my gastroenterologists office and she said I can pay 1/2 of the office visit which will still be $40 and come in to see him. Thats if he doesn't do anything extra like bloodwork or any tests while I'm there.
I don't have insurance but I desperately need to see him NOW!
I go to see him monday oct 16 at 10am
I will ask about the dissolvable prevacids.
I just got home from work and I ate a couple of spoonfuls of pudding and again I have that raw, tight feeling in the back and down the sides of my throat. Just from eating pudding?
I am continuing to lose weight because I can't eat properly. I am currently 135. I am 5'10".
I don't want my doctor to hospitalize me because he thinks that I'm starving myself. I want to eat so badly and I've expressed this to my doctor and started bawling to him.
I am going to ask him if he will expand my esophagus when I go in for my visit and see if that will help.

Hi - I hope your doc appointment was satisfactory on Monday? Let me know what he said about your throat.
My throat and swallowing sound the same as yours. I never even considered that I might have GERD, or acid reflux, until I started looking on the internet. I never have that taste of acid in my mouth, but I wonder about other symptoms?? I'm afraid to take a prescription medicine, because I have seriously bad reactions to every medicine. I took old fashioned liquid Maalox a couple of days ago, but woke up in the morning with my stomach bloated and very painful.
Anyway, I hope you're feeling better.

Hi, Hamilton, I also have acid reflux and also take Prevacid 30 mg. A few weeks ago I got bronchits and every so often my throat would feel tight as if someone was choking me but my throat is still bothering me. I am going to see the Dr in the morn. I'm not sure if it's the acid refulx or part of a cold that refuses to go away.. I have not have any problems with the Prevacid.I also feel like my throat is swollen on the inside and it hurts to swallow. But that feeling only lasts a few min.
I do on occasion get the acid in my throat but it's not the norm. I have also been told I have gastorparesis. Don't know if that's what's doing it or not. It does feel sore from swallowing all the time. I have a post nasal drip.
How was your appt? What did you find out?

Ya, been having these throat problems all year. Sometimes it feels like so hard to breathe. Can't even wear a crew neck t-shirt it bothers my neck. One ent scoped me and can't find anything. Will be seeing another ent in a few days. My wife who have sonewhat milder throat symptoms was scoped by her ent and was told it is acid related. She was prescribed zantac 150 2x a day, 5mg diazepam, I think thats valium, and some liquid stuff for throat infections. My ent said throat problems from acid reflux are extremely rare. Maybe he should spend 1/2 hr and read this board and a few others.
I think my nasal congestion is acid related too. I'm currently taking 40mg protonix daily and sometimes 1 zantac 150 at night. I was also diagnosed 2 yrs ago with gastroperesis which means food sits in the stomach for a long time, not good for acid reflux.

This is how the ENT explained it to me. There are muscles that contract and shut when the acid is coming up. This is to protect your lungs, if they did not close the acid may get into the lungs. He said that many times, these muscles stay contracted and this is why you have the feeling your throat is tightening. Sometimes this can last days for me. I do know that laying down, or sleeping helps me. I guess if you relax the muscles relax. I have no warning when this is going to happen, very frustrating, so i just stay on the meds. I wonder if a muscle relaxer would help after an incident?

Yes a muscle relaxer will help. A lot of doctors do not understand or dare to admit acid is causing these throat problems. I feel better during sleep, the tightness is diminished. My new ent who scoped me a few days ago diagnosed my throat problems to acid reflux. Said just continue the ppis, change diet, raise bed, etc.

Hello,

I had throat symptoms for many years. After refusing to go on medication, my husband talked me into going to his chiropractor.

Ever since my first adjustment, I never looked back. My problems are gone. AND...if I do feel a reoccurence coming on, I go get an adjustment.

Please consider this, the drugs have side effects and if they can be avoided, you're better off.

If I do have a little indigestion, I also take a natural remedy for it and it works really well.

Let me know if you decide to go.

When I was going through some bad acid reflux my throat did eventually tighten and it was hard to swallow. I think that is essentially because when the acid comes up it burns and it starts to swell from the damage. Thats just my theory. I could be wrong.

I would seriously start looking into some natural remedies that may help deal with the underlying cause rather than just medication that deals with the symptoms only. I have been taking Enzymes that help digest my food. On top of that look into drinking (although it tastes gross) Aloe Vera Juice. The good stuff from the health food store and it helps soothe the damage to the esophagus. Give it time to work. Such damage as this takes time. Even for me who has only been suffering with Reflux for about 5 months or so. Hope it goes well. God Bless.

I went through the same problem felt as if i was choking while eating because my throat felt so very tight. after that very scary choking incident i gave up solid foods, by the way the tightness you feel is mostly likely the irritation in your throat from the acid.

as i said i actually stopped eating and was only on ensure for 3 months, went to doctors all said nothing was wrong got 3 endoscopies said i had irritation and acid reflux gave me 2x prevacid didn't work then 2x prilosec nulev, and so many others and they didn't do a thing, anyway i was so desperate since all said i had nothing,I and i wanted to eat but was afraid of choking I went to 2 ENT docs and got scoped, the 2nd one said i had LPR finally i started 2 nexiums and I have to tell you a girl named "aswander here had said she had this problem and she felt that lump in her throat and after taking 2 nexium the feeling went away after 2 hrs, and that happened to me to after taking it the throat cleared up quickly, Its now starting again after almost a year but i think its due to a thyroid medicine change, its giving me bad acid, anyway try nexium since its about the best PPi out there.

By the way i had developed such fear of eating because of the choking incident , and teh acid got worst doe to not eating solid foods, when i started trying to eat solids again it felt stuck in my throat and i would panic for fear of choking, that I had to take celexa an antidepressant to help me cope with the fear, it took it completely away

this acid reflux put me through alot but I am glad i am much better now, hope you all get better as well, we just have to know the symptoms and what to take when were feeling an irritated throat, for instance i take maalox, and it soothes the throat.

Binkyholder, I have also heard that getting adjusted helps many things, I have been wanting to go to a chiropracter to get adjusted but now that you mentioned that it helps acid i will definately go, it worth a try!
