I have bees struggling with this reflux for 9 months. It has gotton a litlle better inthe last month. However I am still struggling with all the burning. I have it most of the day. I did go on my cruise last week and had some good days, not great days and a lot of bad days. I did eat in moderation and was careful what I ate. I still ate when I had burning. I continue ot have this burning no matter what.
I know there is a lot of new posters so I will repeat that I am on nexium daily, have has all the test I could have and was scoped two times in two months. Docs found nothing. Have another opinion and he said the same. But the burning is horrible in my stomack and up to my throat. The lump in my throat has gone. Is this is what I have to live with the rest of my life? I don't know what to do but I can not tolarate it any more.
Any suggestions?????
Thanks

Hello tlily, my advice depends on whether you have been able to stop the reflux from coming up and hitting your throat. If you have (by diet, or pills) and your throat still burns then do the following and your throat will stop bothering you in less then 2 weeks. Drink only water but here's the catch. Most people (me included) were drinking water throughout the day. For some reason this keeps the throat irritated (acid? fumes? rising from stomach?). I'm not telling you to stop drinking water, just drink it all at one time, don't sip it over the course of hours (and don't drink at all when eating). Of course if your reflux is still coming up to your throat (especially when sleeping) then this will not help.

my suggestion for the burning is Manuka Honey. look it up online and read about it.
I swear it helped me like nothing else.
I don't do ppi's anymore, they make a couple things better, but more additional problems.
I believe I had an ulcer or gastritis and take manuka honey daily.
Yesterday I had some cheese enchiladas :nono: and that really upset the apple cart. Today I'm drinking hot water with my honey and already feel better.
worse case, even if it doesn't help, it taste good and good for you, better than sugar for sweetener.
Can diabete take Manuka Honey?

tlily,
I forgot - are you on Nexium 1x or 2x per day?

I am on one nexium a day. I was doing two for a while and it was bothering me. However, maybe I should try two again. What do you think? How are you feeling? Last time I heard your LPR was back. Sometimes my throat burns again. I always feel it burning either in my stomach or throat. I also get hunger pains.
I was thinking of trying two again. Maybe my system got use to the one that it could take the two. However even with two the burning did not stop. But then again I only was on two for two weeks.
thanks

Tlily,
I was successfully on Nexium 2x per day for 4 years. Then in August, I ate a pound of grenache-type dark chocoate bonbons called "Sarah Bernharts" and the next day I couldn't stop coughing. For 6 weeks, I coughed and coughed, tried upping the Nexium to 4 pills a day, but kept suffering from a feeling of extreme dryness in my esophogous and I kept losing my voice over and over.
10 days ago I decided to try switching medicines and went over to the only other med I hadn't tried - Aciphex. I took 2 pills together, and stopped coughing in 20 minutes.
It's been 10 days on Aciphex, and I'm back to normal. I don't want to make a final call until it's been 2 months, but I'm doing just fine right now.
Maybe these meds crap out on people after a few years - or maybe all that chocolate had something to do with it (I'm not overweight - was just being a little glutionous for chocolate while PMS-ing). Maybe we need to rotate meds. Anyway, I still can't eat any hard chocolate or drink anything with caffiene in it - it seems the caffeine is the big problem right now. But I'll gladly give it up to stop coughing.
So sure,I'd recommend trying Aciphex - or in your case, try anything 2x per day to see if you can get it under control. I feel terrible for you with the heavy cough. It's awful!
BTW - I take my 2 pills at the same time.

I am glad that you are feeling better. I have been taking 2 nexiums for two days now and feela little better. It is so hard to give up all the foods that you love. But it is better than feeling ill. I do feel a little better but not myself. I wonder if that will ever happen again. I have been listening to relaxation tapes to bring down the anxiety.
I think you may be right about switching to different PPIs. Protonix use to help until it got bad. Then it did nothing. I tried aciphex and it gave me side affects. However, if nexium stops working then I would give it another try. Anyway one day at a time I guess with the hope that things will improve if even if it is slow.
