Does anybody have any suggestions on which alcoholic drink is best with Acid reflux (and I dont' want something that will irritate my throat again). I know it's best not to drink any alcohol but sometimes you go out and want at least one drink. So which drink is the lesser of all alcohol evils?

I haven't tried this one but maybe a White Russian since it has a milky mix in it, to coat your stomach?
I have had to give up alcohol, beer and wine and champagne (my favorite) so maybe you'll have better luck with it.

If you maybe have one beer then it could be ok. I just know that anything with liqour such as Jager or rum whiskey...gives me the worst heartburn. But try to stick to a light beer not something heavy likie Guiness.

You know alcohol is not good if you have acid reflux.

I encouage you not to play games with your problems-- it will just gets worse -- ask any recovering alcoholic--- they just can't have 1 drink and an X smoker -- 1 smoke --- yea right!!!

Are you serious or not about about controlling and curing your problem?

I wish you well~~~Harry

Anything with carbonation will do the most harm - so stay away from beer and champagne and any mixed drinks with a carbonated beverage in them.

I've found that flat-style beers like Guiness aren't that bad. It's the heavy carbonation that sends acid protons flying up to my esophogous that's the most dangerous.

i agree with that 100%. I can drink Guinness and that's my beer of choice anyway, as long as I keep it to only one.
I can also drink La Croix which is lightly carbonated water, but anything else with carbonation forget it.
good luck.

I recently read about a Swedish Study on Acid Reflux and a statement made by a Doctor conducting the study was--
" We know that drinking alcohol causes symptoms to occur in people who already have acid reflux disease so we were quite surprised to find that long term use did not increase the risk of developing it"

I think if you have active Acid Reflux -- you should not drink alcohol. I know there are various degrees of Acid Reflux and many of us respond differently to both foods and drinks. And, if you do drink some types it may not bother you but that goes also for many foods and drinks. You may find out later that it does hurt you--- then what are the long term results???

Research is still being done to determine what causes weaking of the LES and why Acid Refux is increasing in the United States.

Alot is known about Acid Reflux but there is so much that just is not known. Time will certainly tell and some life-style changes may be needed.

Less than 10 years ago ulcers were not treated with antibiotic and PPIs in the USA -- but it was dicovered in 1982 that about 85% of ulcers are caused by H pylori bacteria.
The 2 Austrilian Doctors that made the discovery just got the Noble Prize in 2005. One was Dr Barry Marshall,MD from Perth, Australia that work at the Univ. of Virginia Medical School for 10 years. Just a little history about how things change. Ulcers were thought to be caused by stress for many--- many years -- all was wrong.

It is always best to be safe than later sorry.

Take Care~~~Harry
