On another thread I recommended bananas to lower blood pressure and someone responded that he can't have bananas because they increase his heart rate. Is there any science to this? It's news to me, and how bad is an increased heart rate? Thanks

That's crazy. Just think of their gene's, weight and other factors.

Bananas contain potassium. Some kidney problems result in the body's inability to excrete potassium, and high levels can result in heart palpatations. With some blood pressure medications, a person has to watch their potassium intake.

There's nobody on the planet that needs to avoid bananas.

Hyperkalemia can be a very serious condition. If potassium levels rise too high (over 7 mEq/ml) it could lead to changes in muscle control, arrhythmias or even cardiac arrest.

My son's potassium levels have risen too high a few times before (over 6 mEq/ml) and he has needed treatment for it.

Because of kidney problems, and the medications he's on, for hligh blood pressure, the doctors have told me to watch his potassium intake and said he should not eat too many bananas, as well as oranges and other foods that contain alot of potassium.

Saying nobody on the planet needs to avoid bananas is like saying nobody on the planet needs to avoid salt or sugar for example. Medical conditions can restrict many things people can't eat.

Thanks for posting that. It took me by great surprise when I read about bananas being off-limits for someone. It's too bad because they really help me.

I didn't say that you can't eat bananas. Just take care and see what is happening when you eat them. If you feel better then keep eating this great fruit. For me I feel that I can't breath when I eat bananas and next day I'm fine so I don't eat them at all. :)
Good luck,
Michael
