Either way, he should see an endocrinologist and a nutritionist. I had HI that caused low bs and I had to have a steady flow of carbs for awhile to avoid lows. If it causes high bs, then insulin resistance is an issue and a low carb diet, exercise, and weight loss are key to treatment. bigsis0929 10-14-2006, 07:46 PM See, I've learned something already!! I thought it HAD to cause High bs.!! Anyway, yes his is high. Is there a recommened amount of carbs., and or sugars to stay under? Endo. diagnosed this, along with fatty liver disease, and we have alot of upcoming appts. Until then, I'd like to learn as much as I can about all of this! Thank You!! PAM Mark1e 10-14-2006, 10:14 PM ..... Is there a recommened amount of carbs., and or sugars to stay under? ..... The less carbs he eats, the less his pancreas will be stimulated to produce insulin. And the more sensitive to insulin he will become. Foods that contain carbs include bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, and anything made with sugar and/or flour. The less of this stuff he eats the better. I don't believe there is a magical number you havee to stay under. Just bear in mind that carbohydrate is a non-essential nutrient. And you don't need to consume any of it to stay healthy. I eat about 60 grams of carbs a day. :) Mark bigsis0929 10-17-2006, 11:42 AM Thanks for the info.! What about wheat flour? We are really watching sugar and flours, but it sure is hard for a kid who's used to being able to eat that stuff! He never overate, but he still has a weight issue, and we aren't sure why! Anyways, thanks again!! PAM Coravh 10-17-2006, 06:18 PM The less carbs he eats, the less his pancreas will be stimulated to produce insulin. And the more sensitive to insulin he will become. Even mild ketosis can interfere with brain development in children. Your body needs glucose to function, and an excellent source is carbohydrate. Other fuels can be converted in order for the body to maintain a proper blood sugar level, but the breakdown of these substances leave many byproducts in the blood that are less easily handled by a child's developing system.
