Hi everyone, I am new here and I don't know if I have diabetes or not. Occassionally, (1-2 times a week) I get shaky hungry and clammy/sweaty before dinner after not eating for several hours. After researching this I thought I had hypoglycemia. I recently had a baby (June 06) and passed my 28 week glucose test but I have had this shaky/hungry thing occassionally for probably 10 years it just recently got more frequent.
I just purchased a glucose monitor. Yesterday, after about an hour after eating I tested my sugar and it was 200 - but just minutes later (not even 5) it was 156 and then it went down to 120 an hour later. I tested this morning after fasting all night, 3 times and it was in the 80s. I tested an hour after lunch and it was 159. 2 hours after it was 131 and 3 hours after it was 78 and I was realllly hungry at the time. I ate dinner and tested an hour later and it was 101. About 30 minutes later I was sweaty/clammy like and it was 88. An hour later, still sweaty and clammy it was 120. My numbers are all over the map and don't seem to be consistent from minute to minute. Are my numbers concerning? If not, what type of conditions mimic hypoglycemia that I would feel this way? I am anxious to test my blood when I get that shaky hungry feeling before dinner. I didn't have that today. I feel like I am really hungry all the time BUT I am eating much less as I am dieting to lose my pregnancy weight.
How reliable are these montiors? Is it normal to fluctuate so much like mine do? I can't get a firm grip on my readings. I have the Freestyle monitor.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The only way to know exactly how accurate your meter is, is to check it with the lab when you go for bloodwork. I also have a Freestyle (mini) and it is never out by more than 5%. The industry standard is about 15%.
The most important tests to do are fasting and 2 hours after you have eaten. The sweaty/clammy feeling you get could be due to lower blood sugar. If you drop a lot, you could have reactive hypoglycemia. That means you eat something with a lot of carbs, your body overreacts and pumps out too much insulin, and then you drop a lot.
Your fasting tests should be less than 100 and 2 hours post eating you should be less than 140.
Hope this helps a bit.

This is a typical pattern with reactive hypoglycemia. A glucose load causes your blood sugar to increase sharply. Which, in turn, causes your pancreas to produce an excessive amount of insulin. And all this insulin causes your blood sugar to plummet, making you feel really hungry, several hours later. You break the cycle by simply minimising the glucose load that causes the problem in the first place. In other words, stay away from carbohydrates. The doctor should have explained this.

I disagree. That's a typical pattern of RELATIVE hypoglycemia. In relative hypoglycemia the blood sugar drops a lot, fast. In reactive hypoglycemia the blood sugar actually goes low. There is nothing low about those numbers. In fact, I would suspect type 2 diabetes, or at the very least, impaired glucose tolerance/pre-diabetes.

You really should be screened for Type II Diabetes. It may just be the weight loss diet you're using doesn't work for you, but why risk it. It's better to get tested and KNOW the truth.

I was told about a month ago that I had Diaebetes. I am controling it with Diet and excerise. I walk about 30 minutes a day and eat no more then 3 to 4 carbs at each meal. Eating a big meal can keep your sugar up. Never test you sugar until 2 hours after each meal. In the morning it should be between 80 and 110 and for lunch and dinner it should be 80 and 140. If it's higher then 110 and 140 eat smaller and if it's under 80 have a peaice of candy or a tea spoon of peanut butter. I tested at the beging 4 times a day and after a month I test at least once. Some times I test more but required to do once a day. Keep in touch ok?
