My mom is wondering if Accupunture would help her Neuropathy? Any experiences or thoughts would be helpful! Thanks, Nancy

I had about 10 accupuncture treatments. The day after each treatment my hands and feet felt awful (I have small fiber PN). They felt "fuzzy" or like a turnicate had been placed around my wrists and ankles cutting off blood to my hands and feet. As far as I know this is a REALLY uncommon experience and most people who have recieved accupuncture have NO side-effects. In fact, that's one of the reasons it is so popular! I can only assume that because my nerves are damaged they responded to the accupuncture in an abnormal way.

I do know that many people claim really positive results.

I think it's worth a shot! (pun intended)

I asked my Doctor who is a very experienced accupunturist as well, if accupunture could help my neuropathy, he said straight out no.
sorry

My mom had her first week of accupunture for her numb feet and hands. She was able to tell a difference within the first few days. She was very lucky to have found a very reputable accupunturists who told her up front that he would be very honest if he felt he could help her or not. (He has two very popular offices so we knew he wasn't looking for her money). He also gave her herbs to take. She had deceided to try a natural way because she had been prescribed Neurontonin by her neurologist which kept her in a fog. This is very encourging for her, it's a nice alternative to Rx's that always have side effects.

My friend had the first accupunture session to treat neuropathy pain
[using electrical current on the needles].

The next day, dumbness in an area in the upper leg started
to have feeling again, it's never had feeling in years. Pain level remains the same, but it's only 1 of 4
treatments scheduled. After 4 treatements, if nothing positive was gained, they said there is probably no need to continue,
but if you did notice an improvement, then they recommend continuing.

Only time will tell. I keep you posted, three more treatments to do, one every week.

Update:

Three acupuncture treatements completed by my friend.
Feeling in both legs in the upper half have started,
before there as many numb areas. Recently, feeling on the
tips of the toes are felt. Overal foot pain remains the same.
I think more treatments are needed to see if it gets better
over time.

Update

The acupuncture is a 4 session trial, once per week for
4 weeks. After the 4th session, one week later without
warning, the pain level has risen to new heights. For
about a month the pain was a steady #7 vs. #7 with
peaks into the #9 range. Right now, we don't know why
the pain is a steady #9 for one week now with no easing up.

Some theories.

1. The first few acupuncture sessions caused some parts of
the numb leg to come alive, highly sensitivity though. Maybe the acupuncture has
heightened the perception of the nerve pain?

2. One school of thought says that you may experience
more pain if the body is starting to heal, but it seems that
this condition rarely heals... /doh/

3. By not having more acupuncture sessions, the body is
reacting in a negative way as it's telling you 'I need more of it'
to maintain the lower pain level.

For the past 7 days, we've ruled out all the other variables
and I don't know what the cause of this is yet.

The pain management person interviewed my friend after
the trial acupuncture sessions and re-scheduled for 4 more
sessions in January as they are booked up this month, so
we won't know what is going on for a while.

.. boo .. :dizzy:

Update;

The problem still exists and I think option #1 in my
previous post is the root cause, but I don't know.
We ruled out all other variables, the finger points
to the acupuncture as causing more feeling in the feet,
in this case the feeling is more pain.

Unsure if we should attempt a few more sessions to
verify... got 1 month to think about it...
