i am not a big drinker. only drink every few months or so. well, last night was one of them, and i guess was to excess.

so i woke up in the middle of the night vomiting, and the first was normal. the 2nd one though, a half of handful or so of pure blood came out, as was the third one. i continued to vomit normally with no blood even in the vomit for the rest of the night, and feel perfectly fine now.

this was a little scary. i think it was likely a blood vessel. what is you guys opinion and do you think it is anything i need to worry about?

thanks.

Was you doing alot of wretching before you was sick? Sometimes when a person wretches alot they can cause irritation to the lining of the oesphagus and it can bleed alot due to the blood vessels in there.

But as a general rule anybody vomiting blood should get it checked out even though it has stopped and they may feel fine.

What did you have to drink?

sharon is very right, any vomiting of blood needs to be evaluated soon,as it 'could' still be going on.you just need to find out what it is that caused the bleeds in the first place.there are some things that would be considered pretty minor, and probably just a one time deal, but there are other medical issues that could actually be life threatening.this is why this does need evaluating, today if possible.just call your primarys office and tell them what happened,i am sure they would try and fit you in today.this really DOES need evaluating, just so you know what this is coming from.i would definitly NOT do any more drinking til you know whats up.hope this is just a minor issue.please let us know what you find out,K? i went to doc today. hadnt had a physical in too long anyway. he said since it wasnt ongoing and i have felt perfectly fine since, that he isnt too concerned that it is anything bad, but is going to have me go to a gastrointerologist to find out where the bleeding came from.

thanks for the help guys

...And did you mention to him that the drinking preceeded this?

i had blood drawn, awaiting results....he said that if everything looked normal from that, then he'd send me to a gastro to stick a tube down and find where the bleeding came from. and yes, i did tell him alcohol preceded it.

i know it's better safe than sorry, which is why i went, but you guys are starting to make me a little nervous. almost like you know something is going to be wrong. hopefully everything is ok.

You probably don't have anything to worry about. The good signs are the blood was red or bright red and not dark or looked like coffee grounds. Which would be signs of internal bleeding. Alcohol is notorious for disturbing the lining of the stomach (gastritis). Most likely when you were throwing up, you tore this lining and caused the bleeding. It probably would not have come up if it weren't for the fact you were already vomiting. The doc is just making sure your stomach and esophagus are ok. They may also look for further damage caused by alcohol. My only advice right now would be, if you're going to drink, don't drink to the point that you're vomiting. Know when to say when. Or, quit completely.
P.S. If you do have gastritis, which you probably do...to some extent. It's completely reversable and doesn't pose any serious health risks. (Unless, of course you continue to drink to the point of vomiting).

thanks alot for the help. and fyi, i drink once in a blue moon these days, and this was probably the equivalent of 6 or 7 shots. alcohol does not agree with me, and i can not drink wine at all because it gives me headache and nausea to the point where i'm going to be puking even with a moderate amount (which was basically the case here).

just didnt want to come across as an alcoholic here. complete opposite actually. thanks for yalls continued help and advice.

Thanks for being honest. You don't come across as an alcoholic.
But I've been around a while and can tell you, you don't have to drink every day or even be drunk all the time to be an alcoholic. You may just have a sensitive stomach that doesn't tolerate hard liquor well. If you're young that could be very well the case.
