Help! My mother has been anorexic/bulimic for at least 10 years. She denies this however. She is 5'9" and weighs 95 pounds. She only eats fruit. She purges ever so quitely if she does eat a big meal.

There was (fresh) food in the toilet directly after a meal one day (didn't go down with the flush). After being confronted she denied bulimia and slammed down the phone.

She has been to many doctor's. She is allergic to wheat, soy, and milk. After, lots of money on tests we find out (besides the allergies) there is nothing wrong with her medically. She acknowleges that she her weight is an issue, however she says she is trying to gain weight and is doing the best she can. She is a skeleton covered by skin.

Is there any other approach I can use to help her? The family is extremely scared and frustrated.

Hi Jazmine
I'm so sorry your family is being confronted with this problem. It is difficult for all involved. It is difficult to get someone help, unless they admidt they have a problem and are willing to get help on their own. But I can offer you one piece of advice, DON'T LEAVE HER. This will not help. Sometimes people think that if they "leave" the person will get the message and be "scared into getting better." This does not help. Her ED is NOT ABOUT YOU OR YOUR FAMILY OR ANYTHING ELSE. Don't think that. There's nothing you could have done to prevent it, and you did nothing to cause it. Talk to her, tell her (very gently) how you feel. Ask her how she feels. Communication is important. Be as unjudgmental and compassionate as humanly possible. She'll need it. I applaud you for confronting this and wanting to make a difference! It's a hard road you and your family and mother are traveling. I wish you all the best http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Good luck. let us know how you're doing!

NEVER GIVE UP
~sarah~
