OK...I'm confused and need some clarity: Is Ultram (tramadol) an opioid or not??? I have read conflicting info on this...some say it IS and others say it's not. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I don't think ultram is technically considered an opiate. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

However, in my opinion, it doesn't really matter what it is classified as. I believe it is a way more dangerous drug than most opiates. Many people here will tell you that. The withdrawls from it are worse than vicodin. They were for me. From what I understand it is because it reacts somehow on the serotonin in your brain.

Of course, this is just my opinion of the drug

My doctor says it is not an opiate. I'm glad I quit taking it. My dr. gave it to me because I am in recovery.

Hey, thanks for the replies. It helped me a lot. However, other opinions are welcomed! I still need more information, as I just got off opiates a couple of weeks ago and was prescribed Ultram today for residual back pain--I told the Dr. I did NOT want narcotics and he was very understanding.

Thanks again.

It acts in the same manner as opiates and my main advice and really strong warning is that if you are prone to depression STAY CLEAR of Ultram as I've noticed time after time that the depressive types are more likely to get addicted to it. Please heed this warning.

re ultram,

when you're in recovery anything that alters perception or makes you feel lighter or sleepy or whatever else you've been used to, is a clear danger.. i got in trouble with ambien because it is a "safe" sleeping aid. it almost killed me. just be very very careful and get all the professional input you can.

But, bear in mind sometimes Addicts are in need of medication and when this is the case be very clear about your history with the doctor, be very honest with yourself and your sponsor at all times (if in AA/NA) and make sure you don't worry about the so called advice of doctor AA man etc.

Wow...well, needless to say I am more informed now. I stand corrected. I *thought* Ultram would be a safe alternative to narcs...but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks peace and blaster for your input...I will heed your warnings.

Peace...how did Ambien almost kill you?? I have taken that before, but I had to quit because of memory problems (NO memory while on it) and behavior issues...acting real weird so I was told. That ***** made me feel almost out of my mind and I hated it.

God speed!

how did ambien almost kill me? i drove while on it and crossed over 5 lanes of rush hour traffic down a steep embankment and back up onto the road where i rear ended a car...also had horrific memory problems on it and couldn't remember how much i took or when i took them...i overdosed and ended up it the hospital.. bad, bad ****.....

just be very careful of anything they tell you is safe...if you start to take even a little more than prescribed, call your doc immediately. it may save your life.................................... ..........peace:wave:

Bob is right ... I started using ultram to get off of oxys. now i need it, and i take way too much. the w/d like they said is much worse than the opiates. my body would convulse to the point that i thought i was going to have a seizure (it convinced me not to try cold turkey again) now i keep reading, praying exercising and trying to get a life back that's normal. i want one full day where i don't think about pills. i want out of this health robbing, money sucking and humiliating place. i don't know if you will have trouble w/the ultram, however, there are several warnings not to prescribe it to someone w/a history of drug abuse. i'm not trying to scare you ... well, yes i am. i just don't want you to get that first script. if there is a jucuzzi, yoga, stretching, xtra strength tylenol that will help w./your back pain then pleeeaase go that route. be happy and grateful to be normal, i long for that so much.
