I have acrylic nails with gel....last week I banged my finger into a door and the whole nail cracked...I thought it was just the acrylic, but it turned out that my real nail was also cracked....it was really painful....I have kept a bandaid on it until yesterday when I was able to take the acrylic nail off....I had my nails done today and asked them what to do...they cut the nail and said too short to put tip on it. So I will keep a bandaid on it during the day and keep it off at night...will also put bacitracin on it...Hopefully in 2 weeks when I get my nails done again it will be long enough for a tip....does this all sound right...is there anything else I can do about this???? THanks..

Take the bandaid off all together and do not apply antibacterial ointment unless you have an active infection. Both of these things can actually give 'germs' the environment they need to live and thrive. Bandaids keep the area 'wetter' than usual and the ointment just adds to that. Clean it twice a day with plain alcohol to keep it from being 'wet'. If you must put something over it to protect it, please just use a small amount of plain gauze and tie it on. Do not use tape or a bandaid to keep the gauze on the finger. You want to let it dry out, not keep it wet. Keeping it wet is a sure-fire way of working yourself into a full-blown bacterial infection as bacteria just love a moist environment.

The nail tech could have extended the nail plate with product, then applied a tip and then applied the product over the entire extension. That is, unless the injury was bloody or very 'wet'.

Thank you for your quick reply......I will try that. Will not use bandaid, although it looks terrible with my other French manicured nails, but I guess I have to do that to get it better...
