yes, i have the exact same problem you do. mine are about my kids and family. i am always imagining that something bad is going to happen to my 3 kids and family its hard to get it out of my head. the thoughts are mainly about kids, not husband or family. it breaks my heart because i would die if anything happened to them i just have those same awful thoughts that something might happen to them. good luck and welcome

Hi Mel and welcome-

You'll notice that alot of us here suffer from intrusive thoughts, and I would encourage you to read some of the posts becuase there are alot of good suggestions from people on how they deal with their intrusive thoughts. I would also say that if you're not already seeing a CBT you should consider looking for one, as they make dealing with OCD alot easier.

Being a parent certainly isn't easy. I don't know if you've just had your latest child or if you're had him/her for awhile, but excessive hormonal activity can really reak havoc on the brain. Alot of people with intrusive thoughts about their children actually want to be the best parents they can be, and most of the worry comes from the fact that you want to be the best parent you can be. These thoughts are symbolic, and not literal in the sense that your sub-concious is trying to tell you that there is something bothering you, and it uses intrusive thoughts to get your attention, just like a slap in the face.

What if I'm not a good parent? What if I go to spank my children and hurt one of them? What if I don't take care of them? We want to be good parents so we overthink things and it worries us. Being a parent is a huge responsibility that I can only imagine. With that big responsibility comes alot of sacrifice, life changes, and a life time of dedication. Those are big things to those of us that have OCD becuase they make us stop and think and question ourselves. Can I really do this?

You said that you shy away from your children. That's natural beause your OCD is making you do exactly what it wants you to, which is avoid your children because of all the different emotions you are feeling. If something makes us uncomfortable, we avoid it. Your OCD has the same way of doing this, except it takes it to an extreme level to get you to pay attention.

Hope this helps! :D

Hi,

I am new to the boards also and just wanted to let you know something that i was told that helps a little.

These thoughts arn't your own they are intrusive and you don't want them there, and by being fearfull and scared of them is proof of that. For thoughts of harming people its a natural thought everyone thinks about in now and then and does not mean you will do them. I don't know if this will help at all but i wanted to try. I know the thought that those thoughts arn't yours is wierd because i mean you are thinking them and if you are thinking them then they are your thought but i think its more like they are not your WANTS they are your FEARS. sorry if it doesn't make sense. i get jumbeled lately with my thoughts.

I aslo suffer from intrusive thoughts and recently posted about it although i'm sure you will all think i am <Crazy> as it would be.

Mel-

I don't take Lexapro, so you might want to consider reading what some other members have to say about it. I take Zoloft and I've been on that since I was about 18 years old, and it works pretty well. There are so many SSRI drugs out there and anti-depressants, you just have to find what is going to work well for you.
