If you are diabetic..can you donate your organs? And....can you give blood?:confused:

Hi I don't see any reason not to be able to donate our organs, although not our pancreas of course.

Ofcourse a diabetics organs have a higher risk of not being totally healthy, they would just be discarded if not able to be used.

As far as donating blood goes, diabetics are not allowed to do this.

Yes, you can donate certain organs that the diabetes doesn't effect.

And yes, you CAN donate blood.

You definitely CAN donate blood. As for organs, I imagine it would depend on the condition. For diabetics who've maintained very tight control and have no complications, I would think their organs would be as good as anyone's.

Thanks for the replies! About blood...wouldn't the blood sugar being too high or too low affect that? I haven't only been diagnosed a year..so all's still rather new to me.

Maybe I was given wrong advice, or maybe with other types of diabetes you can donate your blood.:confused:

You can't give blood if you're diabetic in the UK. You can in USA. We have all sorts of weird rules about it over here!

We were diagnosed around the same time. I've been T1 for 23 years too. Anyway, I was always told the same thing...that I could not donate blood. Recently, I read that I can so I asked my doc about it and he said the same...that diabetes alone, doesn't stop a person from donating...maybe other issues, but not just diabetes.
