I am experienceing incredible pain under a molar crown I had placed 3 years ago. I've been taking Ibuprofen around the clock for 2 days, hoping the pain would subside. Well, after I ate this PM, I thought I was going to pass out from the shooting pain. It almost took my breath away, and even made me cry, which I seldom do!!! Anybody ever felt that??? I have to say that pain was worse than childbirth! Suddenly, the wonderful Ibuprofen decided not to be so wonderful anymore. So now I sit here with the entire right side of my face and jaw in agonizing pain. Unbelievable. And I wouldn't even think about calling my dentist tonight. What in the world is going on?

Unfortunately it sounds like your nerve is dying... please call you dentist asap, so he can take care of this. Most likely he will need to do a root canal.
Don't put it off, you don't want to end up with an infection.

Just what I need...a dying root. That crown was costly too. I just hope I can get some relief from this pain. I'll have to say this is the worst pain I've ever had in my life, and I'm over 40!

I had this problem a few years ago. I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night with the worst shooting pains i have ever experienced. I had to put a rolled up hanky between my teeth to stop them from touching because the pain was unbearable. Yes it was the nerve, it was taken out and the crown replaced, never had any trouble since and that was years ago. I did shout when the nerve was pulled though, lol. Not that bad just one last shooting pain. Good luck.

I hope your dentist can take care of this quickly for you. Tooth pain is the most miserable pain there is :eek: . And yes, it is so annoying to have to remove a perfectly good crown. Maybe, if you go to a specialist, they can save the crown and do the root canal through the crown. I had an accident years ago and had to have a cap put on a front tooth. The endodontist was able to drill through the crown and do the treatment and fill the hole she made after that. But this was a front tooth, so I don't know if this is possible on a molar. It doesn't hurt to ask though. Best wishes and good vibes to you!!!:angel:

I agree - it sounds like the nerve died and the tooth needs a root canal. I had a molar done that had a crown already in place and they were able to fill the drilled site on the crown and put bonding material over it. Go to an endodontist if possible. Try rinsing with warm salt water in the meantime - if there is an infection at the base of the tooth near the gum surface it may help draw it out and relieve some of the pressure and pain.

Well THANKS to all!!!! Everyone was correct! My dentist said the nerve was dying, and I would have to have a root canal. I was put on Penicillin for 7 days, and 2 days of Decadron for the swelling. As much as I hate to see money go down the drain with the crown, I'm kinda glad. That thing was hideous. I thought when they put the crown on 3 years ago, it was supposed to be all white. When I got home and looked in the mirror, I noticed it had a shiny silver top, and the sides were porcelain. And it didn't match my other teeth. Talk about major disappointment!!! Sooooo...guess I will get a prettier one this time...

I'm still taking Ibuprofen, and Tylenol too. Now the thing is sensitive to cold. WHAT NEXT!!! I'll tell ya, I have major sympathy for anyone who has experienced pain like this.
