View Full Version : IUI Protocol Comparison

I have done 4 rounds of injectible IUI and the protocols for all were the same.
Gonal F - Day1 - 5
Clomid - Day 2-6
HCG - day10 where 3 or more follies are above 18mm
IUI - day12
No progesterone support after IUI.

I would like to find out if anyone who has gone through IUI have the same protocol. From the information I gather in this board, I found out that some have their blood sample taken to check FSH, progesterone level etc. I never had those done. And I am wondering if my IUI protocol will ever work.

Hi babywish - I also did four cycles of IUI, but only with clomid (no injectibles). None worked (I ended up going IVF), but only in one case did they follow up with blood tests to make sure I ovulated. I think that was the first cycle. If you had 3 or more follies above 18 mm, sounds like the stims were working. The question seems to be whether or not the HCG trigger worked and you released any mature ones. If you're going to do another cycle, it seems like the blood work is something you might be able to request from your doctor...?

Good luck!

Thank you suesy. I will check with my RE on bloodwork. After the last failed iui, he said Ovidrel hcg should be working but whether it was 36 hours or not, we wouldn't know because AF arrived exactly 14days after iui. And my 2nd iui was successful but ended up in m/c at 7wks.

I have figured out a checklist of question for the next iui:
1. bloodwork
2. Progesterone support

Hi Babywish,

I go in for my second IUI tomorrow morning with a different regimine this go round, but here is what I've done.

1st Cycle:
Clomid day 5-10
Labs to check estrogen and (something else, but not progesterone) day 8 and then IUI on day 12.
Progesterone f/u starting day after IUI thru af coming.

2nd Cycle:
Follistim day 3-9
Ganirelix to stop possible premature ovulation day 8 and 9
HCG day 10
IUI day 12
Progesterone f/u starting day after IUI thru af coming (hopefully not this time :)

I had some mild cramping yesterday and they said they could do the progesterone to see if I was ovulating, but they had only ever heard of 1 person ovulating after taking Ganirelix, so I opted not too. Progesterone support after is a standard for them. Not sure if this helps or not, but best of luck to you!!!

I had my first injectable cycle this past month. Here's what I did.

Bloodwork and U/s days 1 (usually day 3), 5, 8.
Gonal F days 1-8 (normally they don't start until day 3 I think)
Cetrotide days 5-7
HCG day 8
IUI day 10
Progesterone vaginal gel once daily from date of IUI until HCG test 13 days post IUI. Oh, I also had a Progesterone blood test 7 days post IUI.
My days were a little off because usually they don't start the u/s and bloodwork until day 3, but they weren't sure if I really had started my period, so they had me come in on what I thought was day 1 (and I was right, it was the first day).

Thank you so much for the info. Will definitely insist on progesterone support after the next iui. I think that was why I had a m/c at 7wks .. my RE thought I don't need a progesterone support due to my regular AF.

Heyknack, this if the first time I heard of iui on day 10. Your cycle must be a short one. Wish you best of luck and hope a double line will appear.

BJ's mama, good luck on your upcoming iui.

I did my first injectible/IUI cycle in Sept.- didn't work and so then you have to take a month break. Here's what my experience was:

day2- begin Bravelle- 2vials
day3- 2 vials Bravelle
day 4- 1 vial bravelle
day 5 1 vial bravelle
day 6 - u/s and bloodwork; increased dose of Bravelle to 2 vials
day 7 - 2 vials bravelle
day 8 - u/s and bloodwork; increased dose of Bravelle to 3 vials and added GAnirelix (Antagon)
day 9 - 3 vials Bravelle, GAnirelix
day 10- u/s; bloodwork; 3 vials Bravelle
day 11- u/s bloodwork; Ovidrel (HCG) trigger
day 12- IUI
day 13- IUI #2

begin progesterone suppositories on day 14 (3 days after hcg)- 2x/day for 14 days. Return for pregnancy blood test after 14 days.
* as i understand it, with progesterone support, you need to take a pregnancy test because you won't get your AF while taking progesteron. So once I found out the test was BFN, i stopped progesterone and AF came about 2 days later.

my Dr. started me pretty conservatively on the Bravelle, hence the increase to 3 vials. The next cycle, he's going to start me on 3 vials.

good luck!

Thanks RedOnion. I'm also on a month break from iui. Today is CD3 and will start my rollercoaster ride on 11/20. Good luck to you too.

Babywish,

Heyknack, this if the first time I heard of iui on day 10. Your cycle must be a short one. Wish you best of luck and hope a double line will appear.

Actually, no I don't normally have short cycles (usually 33-34 days). But they happened to start Gonal F on day 1, which in the end meant I had my IUI sooner. Usually they don't start Gonal F until day 3. So that's probably why. Also, my ovaries respond pretty fast, but it's my uterine lining that always lags behind, lol.
