I recently purchased magnesium supplements, but the one I found was magnesium oxide, is this the wrong one?

I think it depends on what purpose you are taking it for.
Also, some forms of magnesium are more easily absorbed than others.

Magnesium Oxide is poorly absorbed and is mainly used as a laxative. Best to take the Chelated or Citrate salts of Magnesium for maximum absorbtion.....

Why different magnesiums, what do they each do?

Thanks,

Cowspots....Thats hard to answer but here's what i know....

Magnesium works best when its bound to certain elements forming compounds (chloride, sulfate, oxide, citate, amino acid chelate etc..) All Magnesium works to enhance Enzymatic actions inside the cells for optimal health. Which works best has to do with its absorption into the body. The Amino Acid Chelates or Citrates usually are absorbed the best.....

I take magnesium oxide from Nature Made and I contacted them about the different forms of magnesium, but their medical staff insists that magnesium oxide absorbs as well as any other type. I find that if you take it with food it is less likely to cause the laxative affect and try dividing it up throughout the day, rather than taking it all at once. Hope this helps some.

6foot3 is there a reason you take magnesium citrate? Is that good for anyone?

Thanks,

Magnesium Oxide is an Inorganic Salt which are poorly absorbable along with the Carbonates and Sulfates. The Organic Salts are always better as the body recognizes these and accepts them better. But if you like the Oxide form then enjoy.....

Cowspots... i take it because Citrate or Citric Acid attached to Magnesium makes it highly absorbable. It doesn't bother my stomach at all and also Citric Acid from Limes and Lemons are good for free radicals so i get a double whammy with this. This as an Organic salt (citrate).
Is it good for anyone ......i can't answer for others but the research is out there to show the benefits. When Magnesium and Potassium flood the cells then its all systems go inside our cells (mitochondria's).

Want a high energy drink before exercise...take an Emergen-C (high potassium and citric acid) and break open an Magnesium Citrate Capsule and mix in water and drink it and about 30 min you will notice your workouts highly energectic.....

So it's a good thing if my stomach can handle it. I'm going to take the plunge and give them a try.

Thanks 6 :)

I bought oxide, aspartate, orotate, glycinate and chelated
magnesium, one of each. Because I'm sensitive to magnesium, it's best to try each one out to find the one
that is more tolerable {less laxative, gas, etc. }.

I am taking the magnesium oxide, because it just happened to be what Nature Made had to sell. I'm taking it to try to calm down muscle spasms caused by dental work over two years ago and I really want to be taking whatever would work the best for me. Could you give me a clue as to how I can know if my body is absorbing the magnesium or not? Also, is there any other supplement that could help this type of problem?

Since you've purchased all of these types of magnesium, have you tried them? If so, did you find that one worked better than the others? I am very interested in finding the best form also.

Bluerose...i couldn't tell you how as to whether your absorbing Magnesium or not but i'd stick with the Citrates or Chelated types. Even blood testing is wothless because only about 1 % is in the blood at all times. Magnesium only works inside the cells along with Potassium and is responsible for about 300 cellular processes (Calcium and Sodium outside of cells). Magnesium is very high in green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, also avacados) and nuts and seeds.

As for muscle spasms have you tried a good cal/max formula as these both work together in helping this..You Said dental work but didn't say what type....later...
