Migraines started 8 years ago, 6 years ago started having facial tingling, this only lasts for a second and disappears. Went to neurologist, told her about this, she wanted to do brain MRI because my maternal grandmother had MS, and my Mom and Grandfather have both suffered with migraines all their lives. So, I was to scared to have the tests done. I do have migraines. Then one night I was watching TV and I started seeing black spots all over everything, I knew that this could be a migraine, because my Mom has had the black spots on things before, I panicked though, and when I did, my arm went numb, and also the side of my face. Even though I knew that this could be from migraines, I worried that maybe it was MS. So, a few weeks after this all happened, worried constantly, I had a terrible anxiety attack one evening when out to dinner with family. It left me with 3 months of extreme nausea, I had every stomach test done that is imagineable, nothing was wrong. So, in the year 2002, I fell in our perc test hole in our yard and hurt my lower back, so I went to the chiro because it hurt to sit, my tailbone just ached terribly. When I went in to see him, I also told him about the migraines, I figured why not kill 2 birds with one stone, well after he adjusted me he told me that he thought from my symptoms that I had either fibro, MS, or a brainstem tumor, I flipped out, and while driving home I started burning, my skin felt like someone rubbed ben-gay on me, it was everywhere, then the itching started in my hands, feet, and butt cheeks, I was truly a basket case at this point. So this spring I decided that I can't do this to myself anymore, I had the brain MRI done w/ contrast, Normal, then the cervical, normal, doc said there is no need to do LP because he said that I'm just a ball of nerves. I started taking buspar for anxiety, and before have taken xanax, and it does (xanax0 help alot with the strange feelings that I get) seem to be working. I forgot to tell you, cervical MRI showed a bulging disk, doc feels that the facial tingling is coming from my neck, I have been in 3 rear-ended accidents in the last 13 years. My only problem now is I can't stand to wear clothes, the clothes touching my skin makes me feel like there are bugs crawling on me, pull the clothing away from my skin and it stops, why? This is my only complaint, is this somatic? Or what? Am I just focusing to much on this? Or does this sound like MS? If I'm naked, nothing, in the hot tub, nothing, I need some advice please, if anyone can help me out, and if you want to tell me I'm crazy, you can, cause I agree!!!!! Thanks so much !

Jenny ,

Your not crazy, you definatly have neurological symptoms that could be caused by a number of things. The clothing sensation you talk about I have had.Usually on my legs. You need to discuss this with your neuro.

Just wanted to add, that these symptoms are not there while walking or working, only when I sit down, they do not bother me any other time.

Your symptoms are certainly somatic. But are they psycho-somatic?

The vision issues are suspicious, as are all vision issues.

But, if you had an MRI in 2002, and everything was negative at that time, I suggest you have a follow-up.

Your symptoms are very transient and do not follow the typical course of MS. Then again, everyone's MS experience is different.

A recent MRI, most likely, would be negative as well. However, you should have a yearly cranial MRI to make sure that no MS lesions are present. If indeed you and your neurologist are in agreement that the risk/reward of having a yearly MRI is worth it.

One problem with repeated MRI/CT/PET scans is the tremendous amount of GAMMA radiation that one is exposed to. One must be very careful to avoid excessive scans. As only ONE, MRI/CT/PET scan is approx. equal to having 500 chest X-rays.

Hence the reason "fast-scan" low dose scanning machines are being put into use. However, many MRI machines cost well over 1-2 million, depending on their speed, and type. Thus, it will be years, if not decades before the Nation's older model MRI machine's are replaced.

You might want to try a drug that is fairly new on the market, called Lyrica. It is meant to relieve one of the exact sensations you are describing, the feeling of something crawling on your skin, unable to wear clothes, among other nerve related issues. It works very well.

Best of luck to you

Starfishprime, I had a brain MRI w/ and w/o contrast this April, that would be 8 years after headaches started, 6 years after the other weird sensations. Just had a c-spine MRI in Sept this year. I have no vision problems, just floaters, which I guess is pretty normal in the general population. Sometimes I get black spots, but thats before a migraine hits, the black spots have only been there twirce in the last 8 years. Thanks for your help and thoughts!!!
