View Full Version : Anyone On Glucophage Self Treating? How Do You Get Your Meds?

I am almost 99.9% sure that i am insulin resistant & have pre-diabetes, however i have hasimoto's & have just fired my 2nd endo who, when i brought this up to her, ignore me even though my fasting glucoses in the morning have been running between 96-120. I am not diabetic. I am also, for now, done with endocrinologists (unless, of course, i DO become a diabetic, then i'm forced to go)

You need to find a new doctor. Metformin is prescription- ie, you can't self treat.

WHY??? :D

Because you are not a doctor.

Feel free to apply to medical school and go through at least 7 years of schooling (or 11 if you include college). Then you can self-prescribe any non scheduled medication and nobody will complain.

Are you crazy? Geesh.

First off, you have no clue if you really do have IR or if your glucose level is even high. You have no clue what your A1c is.

Secondly, if you have diabetes, then you need to be followed by a doctor so they can monitor specific doses and monitor for complications.

Thirdly, you have no idea if metformin is even the appropriate medication. You have no idea if it will react with other mediciations or is contraindicated for you. You also need to have your liver function checked to make sure you don't already have liver disease the metformin can make worse.

A couple of ideas for you to consider:

1. Purchase a Hemoglobin HbA1c home self test. You can get them at drugstore chains for under 20 dollars. I got mine at a local Walgreen's for 17. That will tell you how good or bad your body's glucose control has been for the previous 3 months.

2. Add cinnamon to your diet. I get a bottle of capsules from GNC that last me 1.5 months for $11.99. There are some studies that show it can help reduce your blood sugar a few points.

The reason you can't self-medicate with Metformin is because it is sold by prescription only. Any good GP should be able to have the A1c test run with general bloodwork, and should put you on oral meds depending on your situation. It's always best to try and treat prediabetes with diet and exercise first, resorting to meds as a last resort.

Good luck.

I just want to make something clear before starting to talk, just so I don't get any replies about how wrong my messurements are. Not used to mg/dl only mmol/L

It's not even sure that you are pre-diabetic when your BG is 96 - 120 mg/dl (if it's 5.3 - 6.6 mmol/L, not sure though :P), because some people have higher BG than others and they don't have to be diabetic. Your doc needs to do the right tests to be sure and I would suggest exercise and healthy foods, so you don't develop T2 diabetes later in your life (if you don't have it now).

A fasting bg between 100-125 is pre-diabetes, but it needs to be lab drawn, not self testing.

Sorry Nymi. I shouldn't have called you crazy, I simply meant it's a crazy idea. I personally feel all medications, prescription and otherwise, need to be treated with respect. However, prescription medications are often prescription because they require a certain amount of professional monitoring.

Your blood sugars do sound like you may have some insulin resistance. My suggestion to you would be to "shop around" for a doctor you "click" with and express your concerns to him or her. Make it clear you want to be agressive with your treatment.

I wish you the best of luck.

BTW, you called my rude and nice in the same thread ;) I'm generally a nice person, just extremely opinionated.

Say a little prayer for me.
