I have been using Vicodin for about a year, three per day was my limit. They became ineffective. I asked my dr to switch them he said no he didn't want me to be on a narcotic 2. The vicodin felt like I took a advil or something. Now a new doctor gave me percocet 500, I am wondering if I take these for awhile if i can go back to vicodin and they will work again????? Or if they are about the same?

percocet 500 mg ? I take 15 mg and it almost knocked me over the first time I took it. That's pretty strong stuff. I wouldn't think if you took a stronger pain med then switched to a lesser one would help you down the road..
You sure it's 500mg ?
Good Luck

I'm surprised your doctors have kept you on a vicodin/percocet so long. You should request a liver test. The problem with both of those pain meds is the high content of TYLENOL which is hard on the liver. Have them test it too.

Stacey , my percocets have no tylenol in it. I was worried about that to , but my doctor said it's safe , no tylenol..

shawley, how do I know if they have tylenol or not? I also wondered if the percocet and vicodin both have codeine? That's why I was wondering if I quit vicodin for awhile if they will work again. However in the few days i have been taking the percocet, I don't like them. I think I will stay on the vicodin, the percocet, make me tired and not feeling so well. The dr let me stay on vicodin for so long, because there wasn't anything else I could do, as I was uninsurable, and they wanted me to wait for the Disk replacement that wasn't approved by fda yet.
Three neuro's all know that I was taking it, and all agreed with it. How do I know if its affecting my liver/ How do they test it?

I'm not sure how you get the amount of tylenol from a pill , but I was taking vikes and my Pain managment Dr. said it was full of tylenol that he wants me to start 15mg percocets , they make me feel ill to , but they help cope with the pain ..Tell your doctor to switch you back before to long , as for your liver, you can have it checked , just ask your doctor. I don't think it's going to hurt you unless you take more than your supposed to.

I think you guys are confusing 2 different medications.
First of the percocet that's "500" is the amount of tylenol in it. All percocets contain tylenol.
The medication that does not contain tylenol is Oxycontin. There's no such a thing as percocet without tylenol.
Vicodin and percocet are not the same product either nor do they contain codiene. By increasing your medication to percocet and trying to go back down to vicodin will not be helpful. What you are experiencing is your body has adjusted the the level of the medication that you are taking and you need an actual increase in medication.
If your pain is going to be long term it is better for you to see a pain management specialist and be placed on long acting medication that lasts for longer periods of time and are safer on the liver and kidneys

Thanks for the info I thought vicodin had codeine. Can't stand the percocet, they make me tired and pukey feeling. The vicodin didn't do either. My doctor did increase my dosage, but then I still asked him to switch me hoping it would help me be able to switch back. Guess wrong answer. I feel bad enough without wanting to puke. I know dr doesn't want me on oxycotin.
Thanks for the help

Actually there are percoset that are without tylenol. They aren't as strong as the percoset with tylenol. Before I went to the pain management dr. I was using them for the breakthrough pain. It is the tylenol that they worry about in the scripts.
Your best bet would be to get into a pain management dr. and get some slow release that works for 12 hours...then you can use the lower doses for break through pain.....

Vicodin is HYDROcodone with APAP or TYlenol. Dosages are usually 5mg. 7.5 or 10 mg hydrocodone with 325 500mg Tylenol
Percocet is OXYcodone with lower amnts of Tylenol but stronger amnt of the form of Codeine.
Tylenol with Codeine is not as strong as Vicodin and Vicodin is not as strong as Percocet because as you go up the ladder the form and strength of the form of Codeine.:p
I had my Doctor spell it all out for me.
There is also forms of Ibuprofen with codeine like Vicodin but with Ibuprofen instead of Tylenol

it is just pure oxycodone then and not percocet. percocet has tylenol in it. and check on your dosage. that is not a realistic dosage.

I was wrong with my post on the dosage of percocet, it is well generic is OXYCOD/APAP 5-500 mg cap. So I am understand the 500 means the amount of tylenol. Okay and now looking at the Vicodin it says HYDROCO/APAP 5-500.
The thing is, the percocet make me feel gross, tired and pukey. The Vicodin always made me feel better, even have a little more energy...or it seemed like it...where I could just keep moving through the day. I have quit taking the percocet, I don't know whats in it that makes me feel so gross, but not gonna take it anymore.
Whats the deal with loritab, anyone know? I had taken one of those before and it seemed like a supersized vicodin as far as the effects and I really liked that, don't know if dr will let me switch to that, just wondered if its same stuff as vicodin.

Hi, I am 10 days post op lami and 14 weeks post op with 2 level fusion. This past surgery I was given oxy contin every 12 hrs and percocet for break thru pain. You all have just sloved my problem of being sick for 10 days. I have felt like puking all the time. I could not figure out what was causing it. I have been on oxy before but it had been awhile. I did not want to stop taking it because my pain is still terrible and I think it will always be this way.
So any way you all saved me. I will switch to my vicoden until I see dr on Tuesday.
Thank you all so much :)
Barbara

I know all the different meds make us all feel different. Some people vicodin make sleepy, not me, it give me more energy or something. Long time ago I had a breast augmentation and the dr gave me demerol, took it twice and again made me pukey and tired, quit taking it to.
Maybe vicodin is the only thing that will work for me. STill wondering about Loritab though

Lortab is the same thing as vicodin but it has 10Mgs of hydro vs the 5 in plain old vicodin.
shawley, what you have there is called oxy IR(immediate release),not actually percocet.they are probably very small pills with perhaps an 'M" on one side?this is what i take for breakthru pain along with my oxycontin.
yvette,if you don't like the effects of the percs, talk with your doc about a higher dose of hydro.besides lortab there is another med called Norco?it has the same 10mgs of hydro but only has 325 of APAP.its the smallest amount of tylenol you can obtain in any hydro/tylenol prep.unfortunetly they don't make any hydro meds that contain just hydro like they have with the percs and the oxy IR.i do agree that you should have some labs run on your liver and your kidneys if you have been taking this med over a very long period of time and on a daily basis.you just need to make sure the meds are not damaging your liver and your kidneys as well.good luck,Marcia

Percocet is the BRAND name of medication containing 'oxycodone' AND 'tylenol'. Just like Percodan is the BRAND name for medication containing 'oxycodone' and 'aspirin'.
Pure oxycodone medication 15mg is usually either BRAND name 'OxyIR' (oxycodone-immediate release) or it's generic equivalent. I believe it comes in doses of 5mg, 15mg, and 30mg. Not quite sure if I have the dosages right though since I haven't used it in quite awhile. Unless, of course, the med is 'extended release' which would be 'Oxycontin', but not sure if that even comes in 15mg.
Lortab is another BRAND name for 'hydrocodone' and 'tylenol'....same as Vicodin, but different manufacturer.
***sorry Marcia (FEELBAD)--I was typing the same time as you and wrote basically the same as what you did.***

I took my whole bottle of percocet to dr yesterday and told him how it made me felt. I brought it so that he'd know I am not just one of the pain med seekers. He threw it in the trash. Gave me new script of loricet. Took it last night and didn't make me sick I actually felt pretty good, but I was resting all night. So today we'll see if it works for me.
