My sister recently noticed an unusual change in her nails. On each of her nails, the moon-shaped lunula is considerably higher than her nails, which look like they have been smashed, but she has had no trauma or injury at all to her nails.
She wasn't too concerned, but I am worried she may have some sort of deficiency. She refuses to go to the doctor for something she deems insignificant.
I searched Google, with no luck.
Anybody have ideas about this problem?

ANY change in the nail plate is cause for concern! Swelling of the lunula means that the entire nail root (the lunula is the leading edge of the matrix) is compromised by something; possibly systemic, bacterial or fungal. She needs to see her physician or dermatologist for a proper diagnosis. Swelling in this area can lead to permanent nail plate loss and I really don't think she wants to take that chance, or take the chance it is something systemic.
