View Full Version : Recovery from tonsillectomy, days 6-9: Hitting Rock Bottom

Hello all,

Well, over the last 3 days I have been undergoing the dreaded descabbing, and it really is the worst part of the whole process. (Well, day 4 was also awful, especially since I ran a fever of 101.5 that day, but that didn't last as long.) Anyway, I have experienced all the misery other people have described here: terrible ear pain (not incessant, fortunately - Percocet seems to keep it mostly at bay), extreme pain on swallowing, a return to an exclusively liquid diet, etc. At the same time, I am feeling a little less tired and "run down" everyday, which I think is a sign of overall return to health. It just sucks that today is Halloween and I can't have any candy at all :( What I wouldn't give for a Snickers bar! :)

The white scabs on my throat have not been coming off in pieces so much as seeming to just "thin out" a little more every day. Now I am seeing a lot of bright pink (very sensitive new skin) and the areas of remaining white are much thinner. The bad taste in the mouth is persistent, to the point that even water tastes funky.

On a positive note, the massive swelling of my uvula went mostly away by day 6, and so I have been sleeping much better.

So, the overall trend since about day 6-7 is positive, and the periods of intense pain are shorter and farther in between (in spite of slowly reducing my pain meds - now it is one Percocet every 4-5 hours, and last night I went for 9 hours without a dose). I have also had no bleeding so far (knock on wood). I am hoping that by tomorrow or the day after I will really turn the corner.

For all of those soon to go under the scalpel, or those who just recently did it: Hang in there. It sucks, but it *does* get better, and it is worth it. I am already breathing much better since having my tonsils out - I can't wait to experience my first winter without the constant infections!

Good luck to everyone!

hi, i just wanted to say that I feel your pain - it's day 14 for me and I'm still not back to normal food yet. I am seriously craving a Snickers bar too :( Everyone says it will be worth it, but 2 weeks later, I'm starting to have my doubts! It is nice, though, to know that there are people to share my misery with on these boards, and it's comforting to not be going at it alone, although I wish none of us ever had to have it done. Take care. And save some Halloween candy for next month. :)
