About 2 years ago I had a lap to remove a cyst on my ovary, but there are many women who undergo laps for diagnostic purposes. From what I understand, this is usually a last resort (after having done HSG & other tests, including semen analysis) because it is a surgical procedure. Why doesn't your doc want you to do it?
Oh, and from what I understand, the increase in fertility is only if they "clean out your tubes" while they're in there - kind of the same effect that you can get from an HSG test. Makes the tubes more open. :)
good luck with it!!

I had the lap done a year ago. Mine was for stage IV endo, multiple cysts, and to get a better look at my uterus, which he thought was bicornuate. Turns out, I had a sepate all the way to my cervix which he was able to remove with the lap. He told me then my chances of pregnancy were so much better. I had been preg before, but MC because of the septate. I got preg again 6 mos after my lap, but MC again this time bc of low progesterone and now have been diagnosed with PCOS. But as far as pregnancy, they say the first year after a lap is the best chance of conceiving. Good luck to you sweetie, hope this helps.

I had a lap in October 2004. I had been having a lot of miscarriages and was having extremely bad cramping through out my entire cycles. Actually, I had a laparsocopy, hysteroscopy, partial d&c ((to clean out my uterus from the miscarriages)) and a uterus biopsy. I was fine. The part I hated the most was the pain in my shoulders from the lap. I was fine walking etc, hurt a bit to laugh. By the next day though, I was back to normal. And like I said, that was after all 4 things done at once, not only the lap.
Im sorry to say it didnt help in the TTC area, as 2 years later, we still have no baby. I just had my HSG though and wasnt given my results, I have a bad feeling about the test results, or else maybe I wouldve gotten pregnant after the lap!
Good luck!

Hi Paula,
I'm curious too to know why your dr doesn't want you to have a lap - if you wouldn't mind explaining further...
I'm all for it. It's much less invasive than most surgeries, and you can learn a lot more than with other testing. I do believe it can increase your chances of success while TTCing, but only like the other posters said - if your tube was blocked and the lap unblocked it, or if you had endo and the lap removed it (and that other thing with the uterus the other ladies mentioned - bicornate? sorry don't know too much about that).
When is your surgery scheduled for? I'm actually scheduled for one next week to try and unblock my tube.
Good luck to you!

I to have had a laposcopic surgery 3 times in fact. I have endometriosis and cysts on my ovaries. The Dr told me that my chances of getting pregnant right after were great. (And I know a few people who did get pregnant right after these) But here we are 1 year later still nothing. I also had an HSG and my tubes are clear. So we are going to start Clomid and all the works in December. The surgery is not bad at all! The recovery time is only 2 weeks (well everyone is different) You are not in a lot of pain after wards because it is done with such small ensigns. I would recommend it to people who are having troubles.

Thanks so much for all of your responses, Im feeling very good about it now. So my Dr says she would rather I do a couple more IUIs before a lap because she says there are risks of making it worse w/ the surgery. Its actually not scheduled yet, were trying to figure out a date that works for everyone. My Dr. said to take a week off for it, does that seem a bit much to anyone?

My doctor made me take off a week, too, but I felt good after only a couple days. I guess there is always a risk for bleeding after any surgery. It's best to just do what they say and take it easy.

My dr didn't tell me how much time to take off for my last surgery. But I can tell you - it was on a Thursday, and I was back to work by Monday feeling pretty good. My lap for next week is on Wednesday, and I plan to return to work on Monday yet again - barring any complications...I don't think an entire week is necessary, but you should always follow your dr's orders.
Good luck!!

hollyncurren...may i ask why you need to do laps twice? mine is scheduled next month when i go home for my 2 weeks break. I'm in dilemma here because i can't decide if i should do it in the beginning of the 2 weeks break or later. I understand from my obgyn that the stitches can only be removed after a week.
Generally which is the best day to perform laps..my obgyn said it's CD7. Since i have only 2 weeks, my obgyn said he will do it on CD26. I don't feel good about this.
Another worry...i have a family reunion dinner in the mid of my break...if i were to do it before that then i have to watch my diet but i really do not want them to know that i'm going through all these fertility treatments...please help...

Thank you very much blueyedsmarty. What i read about laps on the website really scares me...i have less worry now. I've made up my mind to do it as soon as possible. Hope we don't have to go through any further treatment and get the BFPs soon.

Hi Star, my first lap was performed by my OBGYN and was for diagnostic purposes - she discovered the blocked tube but wouldn't fix it. She referred me to my RE, and he performed the second lap to unblock the tube. I don't think it really matters where you are in your cycle, as long as you get the bloodwork to confirm you aren't pg. My first one was done while I still had AF, and my second one was done near ovulation. I also didn't have to adjust my diet too much, with the exception of eating lighter immediately after the surgery. I think if you scheduled the lap for the beginning of your break, you would be fine to attend the family reunion as long as there were no complications.
Are you seeing an RE? If not, I would recommend it. If my RE had done my first lap, I probably would have only had to go through one...
Hope this helps. Good luck to you. Please let us know what you decide. I'll be pulling for you!

Thanks so much for your info. I've decided to do it at the beginning of my break. Mine is also for diagnosis purpose.
Have you had HSG done before your laps. I had HSG in Aug and my OBGYN said the tubes are fine. Isn't HSG good enough to show if the tubes are blocked? And what is RE?

Hi again
Good luck with your lap! Please let me know how it goes!! I did have an HSG before the lap (actually had 2 of those too...one by my OBGYN and one by my RE). RE is short for Reproductive Endocrinologist...fancy for fertility dr. I would definitely recommend seeing one. They are much more knowledgable on IF problems than OBGYNs and they are usually more proactive in trying to get your pg as well. You might need to get a referral from your OBGYN for insurance, but you won't have a problem with that at all. Okay, I almost forgot to finish answering your question about the HSG. :) Usually the HSG is enough to show the tubes are blocked, but my the first one done by my OBGYN was inconclusive. The dye wouldn't even enter my tubes, so we couldn't see if it would go through or not. The second one did confirm my tube was blocked, but that was done by my RE after I already had the first lap. Anyway, enough abou all of that, I'm confusing myself :dizzy: ;)
Just want to say good luck again. I hope your lap goes extremely smoothly and that it bears excellent news!
