I have searched and searched but it's all very confusing. I need to know when to take which vitamins and which ones with food, not take with meds, etc. So, I'm posting what I take and if anyone knows please advise as far as taking what with what and when, etc. I really appreciate it!

Multi vitamin mineral with COq10 added (1)
Slow mag (2)
Garlique (2, twice daily)
Omega joy fish oil (2)
Vitamin C 500mg chewable (2)
Grape Seed Extract (1, twice daily)

I also take xanax 4 times per day for panic disorder and atenolol(beta blocker) 25mg in the morning.

The conditions or problems I'm trying to improve are -
Low HDL, higher than normal LDL, elevated triglycerides(total cholesterol 168)
Trying to quit smoking :nono:
Lost 20 lbs trying to lose 15 more
Keep my blood pressure in check
Just overall better health as many things run in my family, cancer, heart disease, etc.

Anything more I could add to my regimen?

Any and all advice is really appreciated!

Thanks,
Tori

Looking at what your asking i'd think diet should be number 1# so have you researched the Mediterranean diet. Lots of green vegetables (spinach, brocolli, onion, kale) and low glycemic fruits (blue and black berries, apples) and fish, chicken, lean beef and good fats (olive and fish oils). This is the healing and longevity diet....

As for your supplements you don't specify the mg's except on vit-C so i''ll take a shot at it. On your Magnesium it should be 500 mg a day. Omega joy (1 gel at 1000mg, 300 DHA/EPA) increase to 5 or 6 a day.

Your TL cholesterol is great so to raise HDL the best is exercise. Forget LDL this is a non issue as HDL is more important and to lower triglycerides loosing body fat will take care of that.

To take care of all these concerns you have takes more than just some vitamins etc..as its diet, exercise and supplemnts combined will ensure your health and longevity...

Yes because my good cholesterol is under what it should be and my bad is too high as well as the triglycerides being elevated. Not a good ratio.

6foot3 -
I will look into that diet. I know supplements alone won't help but I know also that it's very hard for me to eat enough real food to get everything I need. I don't eat red meat(well, maybe once a month small serving). I eat fish 4-5 times a week plus take the fish oils, eat chicken breast no skin maybe twice a week and eat a lot of veggies, whole grains, no sugar, etc. I avoid trans fat like the plague and try to keep my sat fat low and use olive oil and flax oil only, no butter or lard. I'm not a big fruit person and our grocers produce is awful so I am always disappointed with the fruit I do buy. And also with the smoking which I'm working on, I know I need more of certain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I walk as my form of exercise but am looking into water aerobics and strength training. I need to lose 15 more lbs. I really appreciate your help! Any more suggestions?
Thanks,
Tori

Nuttygirl ...your on the ball as far as your diet and supplements go...There's probably not anything else i could advise so keep at it. Maybe some else has any thoughts about it....

I am curious as to what your Triglycerides and HDL/LDL numbers are. With a TL of 168 and a great diet and supplements your taking i'm wondering if a doctor or someone else is giving you wrong info about your blood parameters...

HDL over 50 is good
LDL under 100 is good
Tri's under 100 is good.
TL Cholesterol under 200 is good.

Well to be honest I just started this way of eating and taking the supplements after my doctor told me about my cholesterol levels. I plan to keep this up and have it rechecked to see if it's improving.

Total 168
HDL 48
LDL 112
Triglycerides 218!!!

So, I've got some work to do. Funny though, with the tri's, isn't that sugars? I don't eat sugar that often - right now very little if any. But before the tests in Sept. I wasn't a super sugar eater, maybe once a week. Also, my fasting glucose was 98 which is one point under what would be considered diabetic risk or pre-diabetic.....ouch. Anyway I really need to get my tri's down to normal and raise my good. Anything you know of to do this? Besides what I'm doing?

Thanks so much for all your help!
Tori

Nuttygirl......Your cholesterol is very good. Your HDL/LDL ratio is 2.3 (4.4-3.3 is very good) Your HDL 48 divided by LDL 112 is how you get this and the lower the better so at 2.3 thats great.

Triglycerides are blood fats..The fats in your diet and fat on your body flows in the blood so thats how Tryglycerides are figured...

So you changing your diet and exercising will greatly improve these numbers in 6 weeks as a blood test then should confirm.

Again a TL cholesterol at 168 and an HDL/LDL ratio at 2.3 are very good numbers so relax and do what you started (diet and exercise) and you'll be just fine. One more important test you can ask your DR. about is the ''C-Reactive Protein'' test. This measures the inflammation in your arteries which contributes to Heart Disease so you might have this test done ...

I would up your Vit C to 3 times a day and add a B complex supplement. Also, make sure you're getting enough potassium, and if not, then add a supplement. If you take your supplements after meals, you shouldn't have a problem with the meds. In answer to your question as to when to take supplements, I would suggest you split them up throughout the day after a meal. For instance, take B's and some others at breakfast, some at lunch, and the Multi and others after dinner.

Hope that helps!

Also, you might try posting your numbers at the cholesterol board here where you will likely receive a lot of information from very knowledgeable people, not that 6 foot isn't, but just for additional support in that specific area.
