View Full Version : Swollen Neck (throat closing)?

My husband had swollen glands in his throat for the last few days. He complained of it being very sore. Then his neck swelled up like he had goiter with this huge round mound the size of a lemon. He has been admitted to hospital.

They did a ct scan and it is normal so there are no tumours or growths. I have never seen anything like it. They have him on intravenous antibiotics and saline solution. He has a lot of pain even swallowing his saliva so they are giving him morphine for pain. His neck looked bigger tonight then it was this morning and he is now running a fever. I have never seen anything like it although the throat specialist has seen it before. Has anyone else heard of anything like this? Of course he and I were both worried that it would close off his airway.

I am sorry to say I personally have never encounter with an infection causing such a response. However, 2 years ago I had a similar personal experience with an auto-immunological response where my immune system went hyperactive and I had to take a week long high level steriodal treatment to reset it. When my immune system went into over drive, it was like i was going into anaphlaxsis (sp) shock, but slowly. Swollen neck and glands, severely restricted airway, couldn't drink, eat, or swallow... breathing was labored, mucus production in over drive etc.. the more i stressed the worse it got. This took two days to cut off my airways, by which time the immunologists, said that there was no indicator of viral or bacterial infection, just my immune system attacking itself. A steriodal shot followed by oral steriods for seven days, suppressed the symptoms in a matter of hours. In 24 hours it was like nothing was wrong.

I am sending prayers your way and hope things improve for both you and your husband.
Best Wishes.

I thank you for your response. My husband has returned home and is fine. The intravenous steroids and antibiotics have done the trick. He still has to continue with the antibiotics for another week. He did have a fever at one point but I am still not sure whether there was an underlying infection or whether it was just the immune response. We just sure hope it never happens again.

Thank you for your kind words.
