So I see a Psychiatrist in about a week and a half. My Psychologist just diagnosed me as having OCD, GAD, and depression. So I'm just wondering, especially in terms of the OCD and GAD, what meds do you take for that? I've taken anti-depressants and mood stabilizers before so I know all about those but I know nothing about meds for the others (OCD and GAD). Thanks!

Hey

Medications used for depression are commonly used for OCD. Usually, you are prescribed an SSRI for any anxiety disorder(s)... so it's something along the lines of Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc. There are quite a lot (about 30, I think), and theres a lot of info about them online if you try a search engine. Some seem to be more effective than others for certain people, so you may have to exeriment with the different kinds under the supervision of your doc. Sometimes they might use an anti psychotic to reduce anxiety... I think this is pretty rare though.

It's great you got a diagnosis, it's an important step to feeling better!

i've found zoloft to be helpful. i still have to work on it, but it took away the intensity of the thoughts.

Hi. I have also been diagnosed with OCD. I am 35 yrs. old and have always had OCD tendencies, but they were always functionable. Then one day I freaked out and haven't been the same since. I understand how you feel. I have been there! I also see a psychiatrist and he put me on something called Luvox. It is an OCD medication, but it also works as an anti-depressant (since most OCD sufferers get depressed b/c of the OCD). This medicine really helps and I had never heard of it! Ask your psyciatrist! In the meantime, you are not alone!
Take Care!

Thanks so much! I am an obsessive researcher so I'll be looking up everything about all of those medications. I never thought of my researching things as being OCD, only as wanting to be informed but now I realize that I take it A LOT further than most people do (obsessively so). Anyways, I'll still look them all up so I can be prepared when my doc tells me what he's going to put me on. And like I've mentioned in other posts, it's so great to talk to others that understand and who I don't have to hide my idiosyncracies (as my husband used to call them) from, because you know what I'm going through. Thanks!!
