How old does a child have to be to show OCD symptoms? My grandson is 17 months & I have seen signs of what I consider OCD. He gets upset if he has food on his face & is relieved when I either wipe his face & hands or give him a wet wash cloth so he can do it. While feeding him I set his plate on the tray of the walker & it has to be balanced before he will eat. The first time I noticed I had set it 'balanced' on the tray, he ate then he bumped the plate & it set at an angle, he quickly re-set the plate & continued to eat. Each time the plate was off balance he stopped & re-positioned it. When he spills juice from his tippy cup he panics & cries until I wipe it up. When he's walking around with the cup, if a few drops spill he runs to me pointing to the roll of paper towels. I give him one & he wipes it up from the floor then throws it in the trash can. When bathing him he closes the lid on the shampoo bottle & when changing him he shuts the lid on the diaper wipes. It seems to be very URGENT that he close or shut things right now! If the cabinet door is open, he must shut it. The other day he was pushing a toy with plastic shapes in it. He dumped the 'cart' & the shapes flew all over the floor. He immediately started crying & was picking them up as fast as he could putting every shape in the correct hole. He is very bright, loves books & can point out every animal on command. He lacks for no attention by every member of the family. High amounts of praise (sometimes we praise maybe too much?) What is the earliest age a child has displayed these tendencies? Any info is welcome! Thanks.

Hey

It's possible I guess, but I've never heard of it happening so young personally. Hopefully it's just kiddie fustration or something similar. Speak to your doc.

I started showing OCD symptoms myself around the age of 5 or 6, and it does tend to start in males at a younger age than it does females. I think OCD below the age of 5 is considered rare though, as before that age a lot of the psychological development needed for OCD to operate hasnt occured yet. Dunno if that helps.
