View Full Version : How have you been tricked....

Hi: was wondering if any of you have been tricked by your doctor or anyone into fessing up to eating disordered behavior? I had for lack of a better word an alternative exam done by my doctor. My last doctor started asking me a lot of personal questions about food, what I eat, what my friends and family think of my physical appearance (I recently lost a lot of weight). Instead of a regular exam (he is not a take your close off kind of doctor, he just does medical tests and I saw him for 2 years and he never did more then listen to my heart up until this alternative exam junk started) he would give me a hug, pat my back, hold my hands and look at them nothing wrong, just different. Sort of made me feel like he was getting to close to what is going on with me... I am not really sure what is going on with me...
So, my question is has anyone had this happen with a doctor or a friend/loved one?
Or am I just crazy

the funny thing is I am not so much upset that he asked personal questions, but he came up with very creative ways to do it and I caught him in a couple of less then truthful stories. Seems he decided to stroke my ego and ask my advice on a certain surgical procedure that I had done and wanted info on it because his sister-in-law was going to have the same thing done. He told me the name of the doctor that was going to do the procedure and a whole big story and I fell for it hook line and sinker... I told him just what I thought, and I felt good and thought I was helping him... until I went home and found out via the internet that the doctor that was to do this procedure on his sister-in-law did not practice that form of surgery... I hope this makes sence, basically the guy lied to get me to show him my surgical sight so he could see how thin I am.... I feel sort of stupid... I wish he would have just said, Hey, I need to see what you look like without your close on so I can insure you are not taking off to much weight. I think that would have done less damage then what he did. I was so upset when I figured this out that I stayed in bed for 2 days only getting up to exercise, drink and go to the restroom.
I'd love to know I am not alone

I agree with you. It is terrible to feel tricked, lied to or betrayed! Trust is very important in a doctor/patient relationship and the lose of it can be devastating!

It may be, however, that the other doctor *did* agree to operate on his relative. It *is* a possibility. And if the doctor did deceive you, it was very wrong!... yet his motive was to help you. He would probably be very upset to know that his method of 'helping' had contributed to you staying in bed and being depressed! (He obviously cares for you as a person, for you described him as acting affectionately toward you during your past visits.)

I suggest that you forgive him. We all make mistakes. If the opportunity or desire arises, talk or write to him about the visit rather than let the pain fester and/or lose the relationship. And if he was deceptive, your contribution may help him avoid causing another patient to feel the pain which you experienced.

And please... don't let the mistakes of others take away from *your* life! You give the offender power over you when you do that. Rise above that. After all, when someone wrongs you, it may hurt, but it means nothing about *you*... only them, if you can follow me there.
