Sometimes I find that listening to certain songs can help me cope. Dave Matthews Band litterally changed my life. Of course with my OCD, i found myself totally obsessed with them back in highschool - but now I just listen to them ocassionaly when I need a "pick me up" Their earlier CDs are very inspirational and optimistic...while the later ones are a little more dark. Anyway, this one song, everytime I hear it, I can't help but think of OCD. I'm not saying Dave Matthews suffers from this illness (although he has admitted to being very depressed) but maybe it is possible. Its not a "feel good" song but it helps me listening to it. Knowing that one of my idols just may have a clue as to what goes on inside of my head. Not everyone is perfect.
Just thought I would send some inspiration to you all. Hang in there and keep your head up. And when you get those horrible thoughts just think "It is my OCD, not me." I've been going through a little relapse lately and these boards are always where I turn for help and people who understand.

Hi!
My two kids (OCD sufferers) are immensely cheered by listening to Weird Al Yankovic. His songs make them laugh and sing and forget their troubles. We listen every day on the way to school and it really starts their day right! (He just came out with a new CD that they love!)
I definitely think music is therapeutic!!! (And I love The Dave Matthews Band too!)
Happy Listening!

Hi Artsy and Lisa,
You are both absolutely right. There have been many times when I wonder if I would have made it through a "problem" without my music.
I love the saying, "music is the voice of angels".
I think sensory stimulation is very important for us OCDers. Having another illness besides OCD, I have some horrible excruciating pain days. On these days, I put on my headphones, close my eyes, and listen to music. On other OCD days, I purposely put on music and sing along. It helps very much to get my brain off of the obsession. Something that I can hear, such as music playing right now, and visual...writing this, and a pleasant smelling plug in........all of these things help a lot.

Good call on the music!!! When I'm feeling like hell, certain songs can really help my mood... A couple years ago I went through a horrendous few months of OCD spikes, and right at the time the song "unwell" came out... (I think its by Matchbox 20?) and it actually made me feel so much better.
The TV show FRIENDS has also been a huge comfort for me. Whenever my anxiety gets bad, I throw on a dvd (I have all 10 seasons). It's like being wrapped in a big, comfy blanket.
