I know MS can cause bladder problem and loss of bowel control, but what about chronic constipation and gas pains???

I get such back pain in the night (gas?) that I am absolutely crippled when I get up -- I collapse back on the bed or have to grab for the wall. I'll go to the bathroom and can barely support myself on the toilet! It all passes (NO PUN INTENDED!) after I've been up and moving a while, but it comes back nearly every night.

I take Amantadine and try to get enough water, but maybe that's part of it?

Lisa_P,

I understand completely. One problem I have is when I cough or sneeze I pee on myself. Do alot of MS patients do this? Or is it other bladder and bowel problems?

I was bothered by chronic constipation and gas pains at night, with the same crippling pain in the morning. After years of pain and thousands of dollars on natural cures I found it was due to the drug BACLOFEN. The problem first began when I was taking oral Baclofen and then my Dr talked me into the Baclofen PUMP which increased the problem. I suffered for 4 years on the pump, until I INSISTED it be turned off (due to other problems with it), at which time my intestinal problems started to go away! Also BE AWARE Baclofen can be physically addictive! AND NO ONE WILL TELL YOU! I am not familiar with the drug you are on, but even if it is not the same as Baclofen, it may cause the same reaction in you.
Good Luck,
Jeannie

The Amanatidine you mention is usually given for ms related fatigue.

Constipation is common in ms.My Doctor treats me with over the counter stool softner without the laxative in them.

There is a medical test, series of x rays. You swallow a capsule with about 24 rubber bands that will show on x ray.You take a stomach x ray called KUB at start test .Then a x ray each day for 3 days. The rubber bands show up on x ray. They can tell how the muscles are moving products through your body by number and position of rubber bands each day.

The test showed how I was hanging up and muscle not moving on my right side so he gave me stool softner and a medicine to speed up flow of products through system to stop my pain.

It is my opinion this simple x ray testing is a great thing.,Doing a colonscopy and other type invasive procedures will not show the way muscle push in your body.I went through all kinds of gi testing for the constipation, before was diagnosed as improper muscle fuction on my right side due to ms,and the tets was so simple, after I had many complicated test to rule out more serious illness as cause.
