I just received a bottle of N-Acetyl Cysteine 600mg tablets made by life extension. I opened them up and OHMYGOSH THE SMELL....
I know some vitamins can smell but this smells like a dirty diaper, and I don't mean wet. Seriously, it smells strongly like you-know-what and I mean STRONG, and I don't even have a good sense of smell! It literally makes me sick.
Is it supposed to smell like this or did I get a bad bottle?
I hope somebody can please let me know about their experience.
Thanks,

I have a big box full of recently bought vitamins. One
day we sat around while I opened up the bottles to check
them out. I passed the bottles around and different people
smelled the contents, each person had a different impression. One person didn't smell anything, another
thought it was foul, etc. Basically, there was nothing in
common between everyone's experience, lol ...
I'd just get a few friends to smell it to see if the ruling is consistent.
BTW, that NAC worked great for my friend's lung coughing
fits in the morning, little mucus in the lungs. :jester:

Yes, NAC does have a foul odor; no need for testing. I've used it for years for congestion.

Thanks so much for the replies. Thanks hypatia for letting me know the extremely foul odor is normal for n-acetly cysteine. I'm not trying to be funny when I say it smells like an outhouse and I truly was afraid to take it. This puts my mind more at ease.

I did get a couple of people to smell it because I was so shocked by the smell. The ruling was definitely consistent--very foul odor.
The info about using it for lung congestion and mucus is great to know. I bought it for brain function help but that is a nice additional effect.
