I was worried sick for two weeks because of the messages I read on this board and others. [B][SIZE="4"]If you have an upcoming tonsillectomy scheduled know that there is hope that it will not be that bad.

First of all, I'd say my mono and the draining of my peritonsillar abscess a year later were much worse. The pain from this surgery did not compare to that pain. I couldn't drink with mono because the tonsils were so big. Atleast they don't exist now!

Secondly, take your pain medication every 4-6 hours to make sure you do not start to feel the bad pain. As long as you do this you should be fine. I had a bad reaction to my medication and could only take regular tylenol after day 5 and was totally fine. I lost 0 lbs with this surgery. 0!!! I was eating crackers and apple juice in the recovery room before i came home. It's not like it felt normal but it was totally manageable.

Also, drink loads!!! I was drinking about 8 pints a day. As long as you take your pain medication on schedule you should not have any problem drinking honestly!!

Listen, it's not fun but, atleast with my experience, it has not been the nightmare other people are describing. Surgery is surgery and your throat is an exposed place but it's really not that horrible. This thing about the scab sloughing-I honesty have no idea when that happened. By the time I went to the doctor on day 8 he said it had already dropped off...um when did that happen???

Im on day 13 now. I still have a sore throat (it's about the severity of a normal bad sore throat) which feels pretty good to me after all those infections! Does anyone know when I am supposed to be feeling totally back to normal again??? Thanks!

I hope this helped people who are about to face the surgery. It's really something you should do. You will be much happier when those gross big fat puffy things are gone!

Hi! I am a 41 year old female. I had my tonsils removed Dec 8th, so I am post op day 12. I didn't have any problems until day 4 hit me. I had been going along fine even picking pecans in my yard and dreaming of going Christmas shopping. I knew I couldn't drive my car yet since I was still on pain meds. Day 4 was when my scabs started to do strange things. By Day 5 I had swallowed part of one of the scabs and that was sooooo gross. I then made it a point to gargle more frequently than I had been doing(with salt water). That way I could spit out the scab instead of dining on it. My mom laughed that it was the first bit of protien I had since the operation...very funny mom! On Day 8 post op, all larger scabs were gone but even now I have that white milky stuff oozing out of my throat. Very strange indeed. I started eating real food yesterday and although it didn't feel great, I didn't bleed so I think I am all right. Does anyone know when you actually are supposed to resume regular foods? Anyways, my experience hasn't been bad. The only reason that day 4 hit me was because I started to think that I would reduce my dose of pain meds due to me doing so great. When those scabs come off day 4-8, you need to probably be on those pain meds full force.

I would say that not losing any weight with this surgery is BAD NEWS! If I have to have a tonsillectomy, I hope it gets my New Years resolution of losing weight started! Haha....that sounds great otherwise..the no pain thing!

I am on day 8 of my recovery, and I have a couple questions...

1) Until today, that back of my throat was ALL white. Now, the left side is still all white, but the right side is all red (almost looks like a big blood clot, but I doubt that's what it is - who knows). Is this normal? Does that mean I'm healing, or does that mean something's going wrong...

2) I am supposed to be leaving for Las Vegas on day 11 of my recovery. I'm still young enoug (29) that I want to drink and have fun. What are my odds of this?

As of now, I'm still eating all soft foods and taking regular pain meds. I've been drinking water CONSTANTLY. Pain is mostly in the morning, but I assume that's cuz of the dry throat overnight (not drinking). Pain has only SLIGHTLY lessened since coming back from the hospital...

Thanks for any input anyone can give!...

Hi,
I had a coblation tonsillectomy 2 days ago( 8 Jan). Was eating an egg sandwich half an hour after coming round from anaesthetic! Not as bad as I thought it would be at all. Much worse now, but I think that's because it's morning and just need time for painkillers to get working. Am eating normal food, but very small portions, and drinking huge amounts of water.

so anyone due to have this op, don't worry too much! take your painkillers regularly!

I'm 54 and in Seattle. Had the surgery 3 weeks ago although I almost backed out after checking out this site. I decided to just take some of the good advice and be satisfied with that.
The surgery was a breeze thanks to excellent drugs. Actually, the first night was good too since the excellent drugs didn't wear off right away.
Days 2, 3, and 4 were not fun. My doc gave me Percoset (1-2 every 4 hours). I did some quick math in my head and decided that taking 1 pill every 2 hours was the same. It really helped me stay ahead of the pain. Best part was I stayed stupid all the time so got plenty of sleep. I was also given a great anti-nausea pill that dissolved on my tongue which I did end up needing a few times. By day 3, I remembered what Percoset does to a girl's constitution and sent a friend to the store for a laxative. Whew.
I didn't even try to eat BUT, I did take the hydration part very seriously. Cranberry juice and flat Diet 7-up were the best. I also chewed gum (yes, that was hard) and almost always had a sugarless throat lozenge going to keep me salivating and swallowing.
Didn't even think of trying anything like ice cream or pudding cause dairy really does make phlegm in your throat and I can't even stand the thought. When I was ready for some food, egg-drop soup from our local Chinese Restaurant was the best. It slid right down and tasted sooo good.
Well, long story short, I had arranged to take 2-3 weeks off from work for this but I GOT BURNED!!! Felt completely better by day 8 and went back to work. Throat was and is still dry in the morning but that's it. I feel great. Except the part about not getting to stay home for 3 weeks.
