My brother in law went for a routine check up for work. His PSA was at 28. A rectal exam discovered a small rough spot. 6 out of 7 biopsies were positive. Can anyone give me hope for a PSA that high at first detection? Or what hope is there?

Thankyou

You didn't give any other background info such as; his age, was this his first psa reading? Gleason, etc.
My fil was diagnosed last yr at age 65yrs with prostate cancer his psa was 100 and his gleason was 9 ( gleason is a grading scale of 1-10, the upper end has a worse prognosis). My fil has a very very aggressive prostate cancer it had already spread to his lymph nodes upon diagnosis, he failed hormonal therapy and is now taking chemotherapy, his life expectancy prognosis is poor, but that is just because his had spread so quickly and the hormonal therapy only worked for a few months for him also he has several comorbid medical problems along with his prostate cancer. Others I have known have been on hormones for years controlling their cancer. Just because the psa was elevated is not a reason to give up your brother in law may respond well to hormones or other therapy.

Thankyou so much for answering........I kept checking and checking for someone to reply. This is very new. Only found out last Friday. Not sure about the Gleason score. He is 50. This is his first test and it was 28. He done the biopsies and on Monday a bone scan and chest xray. Tomorrow is a CT scan. The 16th is an appointment with specialist for results and how to proceed.

My other brother in Law had a test a couple weeks ago. He is 4.7 and they will redo at the beginning of December. He is 47.

Their Uncle has also had prostate cancer and their mom brain cancer......died at 57. My husband is 41 but you better beleive I will be dragging him to the doc.

Thanks again for answering. Any idea on his high level PSA?

There is no "normal" PSA: different things like infection, inflamation etc can affect the PSA readings.

Size of the prostate important as well: larger the prostate the more PSA it produces.

A friend was diagnosed last year with PC which had already progressed to his bones. He's been doing well on hormone therapy with few side effects.
Lifestyle is very important overall and helping one to cope with medication.

He has posted his story on the YANANOW website which has stories from lots of men who have used various treatments from a few months to 15 years.
Their website is www.yananow.net

A very informative book is "Prostate Cancer Prevention and Cure" by Lee Nelson. It's very comprehensive. Lee Nelson is a doctor who has undertaken radiation and hormone treatment himself.

My husband was diagnosed with pc with a PSA of 120 1 1/2 years ago. He is doing well on hormone therapy, and feels fine. Normal in fact. The therapy is keeping his PSA under 1.0.

I understand the shock and emotional upheaval you are going through. Believe me, we have all gone through it. There is always hope. In the next few weeks your BIL will be undergoing tests, exploring options, starting some sort of treatment. He is going to need you to be optimistic and supportive.

Good luck to you, your BIL and his family.
