Hi folks!!!! I've had some trouble sleeping for the past week. I usually go to bed around 9PM and get up at 6AM. For about the past week I'm having a lot of trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. I'll be laying there and gradually start that decent into sleep and then all of a sudden something will pop into my head or my heartbeat will pick up and bring me back out of it. I'll do this over and over until sometime after midnight before I fall asleep. Then I'll wake up 3-4 times after that and it takes a little while to get back to sleep after each time. Needless to say, I'm pretty tired right now. I just dont understand how I can be dead tired and still not fall asleep and get a good nights rest. Is it psychological? Am I just trying too hard to fall asleep? I've never had this problem before. I've had the occasional night of bad sleep but I've always been able to sleep the next night.
I havent head any extra stress or problems lately that I think would cause this. Other than being tired, I feel fine. I havent been sick, my appetite is good. A couple people have suggested taking something like tylenol PM, but my experience with those things in the past is they make you feel worse the next day. They make you sleep, but its not a quality sleep and you have a chemical hangover.
It's only been a week, but its incredibly frustrating. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try a warm relaxing bath before bedtime, a warm milk drink, and dimming the lights an hour before bedtime.
Some people swear by Melatonin - I haventfound it helpful, must be an individual thing.
Some of the newer prescription sleeping drugs dont produce hangover, and give a sleep that is close to natural - see your doctor.

Ive used melatonin in the past and think it works(placebo affect or real) but it hasnt lately. I'm getting convinced that its probably mostly pyschological. I had a couple nights bad sleep and ever since I'm trying so hard to get a good nights rest that its become counterproductive. Alot of people would probably just say something like "Well, just quit trying so hard", but its just not that easy. I've been sitting here all day thinking "Am I going to get to sleep tonight?" It's hard to break that cycle.

I have had the same problem before. I would be just difting into the sleep state then my brain jolts awake and my heart races. My doctor seems to think it is some type of anxiety. Mine started right after surgery. I have had to deal with this on and off for about 10 months now. I think sometimes I am trying to hard. I do have to take something for the anxiety some nights but other nights Ijust try to close my eyes and listnen to the t.v (something boring with a lot of talking like Law and Order) or music. Then I'm not obsessing on falling asleep. Sometimes it work sometimes it doesn't. If you want a sleep aid (natural) valerin root works for both a calming effect and sleep agent. If you wanted something different you need to talk to your doctor. But hang in there and know you are deffinately NOT alone.

I have many of your symptoms as part of my day to day battle with sleep apnea, except without my CPAP I wake up every hour on the hour.
Some things my MD recommended were:
Moderate Excercise for 30 minutes with in 3 hours of your bedtime,
a hot shower/soak... minimum of 15 minutes,
reading,
no TV because the light fluctuations can disturb your sleep patterns if you fall asleep with it on, and
if you can not fall asleep with in an hour, get up do a few things and try again.
This might not be much help to you, but I am sure to get my house chores done at night after my 4 year old is out for the count.
Respectfully Yours,
MG
