View Full Version : Tonsils / Adenoids

AlonsoToronto
11-10-2006, 07:49 AM
Hello All

I stumbled on this website today, on Nov. 10 2006.
I had my Tonsils removed yesterday at 10am.
OUCH!

I wish I would have come across this website earlier. Oh Well, lets make the best out of this.

DAY 1 (Nov 9th):
So the doctor Removed my Tonsils today and also my adenoids. It really hurts. When I was in the hospital still early today, I could talk, and it wasnt bad. It must have been the morphine, thats right, the morphine. I had a full shot of morphine at the hospital because the pain was very extreme. So I stayed in the surgical day care for about 2 hours after the surgery and they sent me home. And they warned me, you have swallowed blood and will throw it up. And of course, as soon as I got home and comfy in bed, I threw up. It was kind of gross. If anyone is reading this, make sure there is someone with you at all times because if you have to get up, or walk, you will be light headed and the last thing you want is another injury.
As the day progressed, freezes have become the food of choice in keeping me hydrated and putting something in my stomach, even though its just ice. Drinking water hurts a lot. Swallowing my own Saliva hurts a lot. Even the freezees hurt. I notice something weird in my mouth which later (thanks to this site) I found out I should not be alarmed. My Uvula is extremely swollen, and it is resting on my (also swollen) tongue. I am also a smoker, so I am taking this opportunity to quit smoking. However, not smoking is making me cough and bring up phlegm. The hard part is, as gross as it sounds, and I apologize if you are reading, is that I cant get anything I bring up past my Uvula. So I am eating it all, very gross. Also, my nose is kind of congested and I cant pull it in because its too painfull, Its a really weird feeling, kinda like a runny nose but inwards.

Overall DAY 1:
I am feeling in good spirits but with a lot of pain, in my throat, jaw, tongue, soft pallete, etc... I also can't talk because it really hurts so writing down everything for my friends that have come to visit has actually been quite comical. I have been prescribed Tylenol 3's and am taking 2 every 4 hours. I notice that the pain has become a little more bearable since I started taking 2 every 4 hours in the afternoon. Before that it was brutal. I was almost at the "sucking my thumb" position. My concern with that is that the strong tylenol will eat away at my stomach specially not having anything in it for 2 days now, and at least another 3 to go. I am taking the next 2 weeks off from work, (in my case its easy because I am self employed) and will see what happens. The pain is a lot, but the T3's make it a little easier to live with. Except when I gotta swallow, WAA WAA WEE WEE! I cannot sleep either, must be the drug cocktail I have put my body through today (Anesthetic + Morphine + Tylenol 3 with codine + the green gargle thing which I cant stand).
I just burped and it hurt, I am now going to try to sleep again. I am starting to feel nauseous again, and throwing up is very painfull...However, I am trying to remain in good spirits. It is 8am on day 2 and I will post my progress / thoughts and feelings later tonight. If anyone has any suggestions for me, please post them. The reason why I stumbled across this board was because I was googling for "fast recovery tonsilechtamy". Any words help too!

Strongly recommended by others and myself:

Oticaine (Otic Drops) For the ear pain to come... like liquid gold for my son and helped me greatly about 3 weeks back.

2% viscous lydocaine oral solution - this is a topical gargle, do not swallow... and don't gargle with it. Dilute if needed with water, and just hold it on the back of your throat. Swish then spit. Numbs the throat for a good two hours... four hours with normal throat pain... it can be used as needed, because it is a topical treatment.

Your T3's, lortab, or whatever taken by the clock. Don't miss a dose.

Ice packs or bags or frozen peas, kept on the throat and jaw. This will help reduce swelling and slow bleeding if it occurs. Keep a flashlight handy and periodically have your loved one or you check the wound sites for bleeding and tears in the scabs. If you catch it early, you can normally control it with ice water/ice chips.

Freeze gatoraide, pudding with protien powder, anything liquid with substance then take a blender to it. Try and get something on your stomach. The nurses forced me to drink sprite for the first 4 hours in the hospital... my son as well. It burns, but I had no vomiting due to anesthesia and blood drainage. You need something on your stomach, vomiting bile will only make your throat hurt more.

I also know you may not believe me, but I forced myself to drink over 100 + ounces of water a day and the more I drank the easier it was. If you do not drink enough, the scabs begin to dry out and cause extreme pain. I didn't sleep for my first 48 hours, and then was only able to sleep in 1-2 hour bursts for many days. Good luck to you. Check out the stickied repost of LisaMP's Guide to an Adult Tonsillectomy it has been spot on for the majority of T&A removal sufferers out there...

I know this is a rough time, I was just there myself and I had to see my son through it. Have some one on hand for your bathing times. That is when I felt I was going to pass out the most. Best Wishes on your recovery.

Sincerely,
MG:angel:

Day 2:

OMG. Ok, so today the pain has been getting a lot worse, regardless of what I do, I cant get past 2 bottles of water during the day because the pain is just too much. Instead of taking the Tylenol 3's every 4 hours I am popping 2 of them in every 3 to 3.5 hours because thats when they start to wear off the pain becomes too much. My ears started to hurt today and I called my ENT and they said that I get no drops, WOOOP DEEE DOO!
I am just about to try to put the first thing in my stomach since the surgery (besides freeezies), its some chicken broth, I hope I can swallow it because I am feeling dizzy and starting to feel weak. My spirits were high this morning but am not feeling so hot this evening. Its 7 pm almost and well, I am hurting. Plus I keep on coughing and this damn phlegm that wont come out, it is so brutal! it even hurts to breathe..... Although I have been drinking more water then yesterday and going to the washroom more often as a result, my tongue and mouth get really dry when I sleep, which is only happening in intervals of about 1/2 and hour. I look like crap! We'll see how the rest of the day goes and I might post something else on. Day 2 sucks!

Part 2: I posted the above 6 minutes ago to be exact. The new tylenols are starting to kick in! So now its better, it hurts a LOT, under normal circumstances it would be unecceptable, however comparing the post tylenol pain to the pre tylenol pain, I will take it any second. THANK YOU TYLENOL 3!!!! I feel like I am getting addicted to them, and am starting to be crabby because I am also at the same time quitting smoking.....OH BOY! I just either dont seem to have a high tolerance for pain or the pain is so much it is very exhausting. I am going to try to eat now, we'll see what happens.

Part 3: So the pain had gone somewhat away for a bit, it became tolerable, but I had the chicken broth, I am feeling a bit bether in that end of things because I am not as dizzy anymore. I have substance in my stomach, however, because I am dissolving the tylenol 3's in water and then swallowing them maybe it eases the pain on my throat as well, assuming that some of the powder stays on my throat and the rest goes into my stomach. So here, today the doctor said I could do 2 Tylenol 3s every 4 hours and 1 advil every 4 hours but in the middle of the tylenols. More Painkillers? SURE, WHY NOT! So here, I just dissolved the advil, and am anout to drink it. I hope it relieves the pain which is starting to feel like a beating. So OVERALL CONCLUSION - DAY 2 SUCKS, and now I guess I must get ready for tomoorrow. 2 days gone, 19 to go. WA WA WEE WEE

Sorry to hear Day 2 is so bad. I am glad your dr. has given you more painkillers - it IS important to control the pain, but you also don't want to overdo it on the Tylenol - it can be very bad for your liver. So try to wait the 4 hrs in between.

I second the advice to drink A LOT. Getting at all dehydrated will make the pain worse and can make you feel really bad overall (headache, nausea, etc.). It can help to wait until about 1 hour after the painkillers, when the pain is usually at the least, and then drink a bunch. My doctor recommended iced tea - strong, regular iced tea - as he said that there is something in the tannins that acts as a mild anesthetic on the throat. I would make a big pitcher's worth every morning and then stick it in the fridge until nice and cold, and it helped a lot. Also, for whatever reason, drinking through a straw was easier than drinking straight from a glass.

Finally, the swollen uvula and tongue suck, but for me they more or less had returned to normal size by about day 6. It makes sleeping and drinking a lot easier.

Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery!

END OF DAY 2:

SO I cant explain this, I am sure is a combo of the 2. I ate the broth, it wasnt just chicken broth, it was a MEGA BROTH with a lot of substance, so it made me feel better.... I ended up drinking 3 cups full of this broth. Also, I started taking the ADVIL in between every Tylenol 3 taking and the pain is a lot better. I actually got REALLY hungry last night and was magically able to chug 3 personal Jello Servings the last cup of Broth, As well as 2 bottles of water. I felt so good to feel FULL, lol. So the end of the day wasnt so bad. I just got up, and it is the begining of DAY 3. Last night I was actually able to sleep a good 4 hours combined, so I cant complaint as it is the most sleep I have gotten in the past few days.
I just wanted to share this because of the good night I am in such a good mood, I am thinking of going SHOPPING...lol
DAY 3 Details coming soon! BTW, I just wanted to remind myself that I am really happy for taking this opportunity to also quit smoking.

ok, So I was feeling super good this morning, well, I think I might just have been high from the painkillers coz now I dont feel so hot. This is weird, its like a rollercoaster. So anyways, I just wanted to post, no, I am NOT going shopping, and am in no condition to do so... not even online, lol.... I got dizzy from surfing through the IKEA website, so nevermind going shopping.
The Swelling in my mouth has gone down though, my tongue is not a freaking potato anymore...and my cheeks arent huge anymore, but they are sore.
Oh well, here we go.... back to sq. 1.

I'm so glad that you're posting this... I'm having my tonsils out on Dec. 19th, I'm only putting it off because I'm in school now and my finals will be over with by then :) I'm so scared that I'm not going to be able to have "good food" on Christmas though! Everybody thinks I'm crazy for scheduling the surgery for the week before Christmas. Keep on posting! It's good info for us pre-opers :) Good luck on the rest of your recovery!!

DAY 3:

So here we go, what a weird awfull day. I am SO HUNGRY and I cant eat anything. It hurts toooooooo much, everytime I swallow it feels like someone is squeezing the inside of my ears.

Anyways, so today has been one of those really really really down days.
I was looking forward to this vegetable puree that my sister in law did for me, with squash potatoes carrots and other goodies but as soon as I swallow it it washes away the residue of the tylenol 3s that sit on my throat and the pain is so freaking HUGE!

But yes, here is a tip, take the tylenol 3's, dissolve them in water and gulp it, some of it that stays on your throat helps numb it faster, its wonderfull.
If it wasnt for that, I'd be crying right now.

So all day, I felt really dizzy and lightheaded, and extremely weak. To the point that every 5 minutes I feel like someone is hitting the OFF switch and my body just shutsdown but before it does I try to stay awake in a panic or somehting, gasping for air, it is the most weird concurrent feeling I am getting. I am assuming it has to do with the painkillers and the no food in 3 days thing.

So I couldnt eat today because the pain was unbereable, and I was coughing more, so I have been forcing myself to hack out phlegm...however, these little weird chunks of black / dark brown residues (feels like flesh) came out of my throat today, and I am assuming it is left over tissue or scab or clot....if anyone can tell me what it is, I'd appreciate it.

Well, the whole day I spent it in bed getting all drugged up, watching tv, feeling like I was gonig to die, and with pain that came back and went away whenever...... mashing up tylenol 3s is suddenly the best survival skill I got right now and am planning to put it on my resume .... lol

I so want to try something solid, but if simple non acidic veggies burned the heck out of my throat, I am not gonna try the home made cookies that were just coming out of the oven 10 minutes ago..........SNIF SNIF!

So now I am waiting for an order of ICE CREAM (non milk) and organic Milk to arrive here so I can get something down with a lot of pain, but its ok because its tylenol time as well, so as soon as I chuck down whatever I can fit down, its T3 time. Thats the plan, and then, to pass out and feel almost commatose on my bed for the rest of the evening. I am worried I havent visited the John though.....its got me concerned because i never have problems on that department.

ANyways, tomorrow, DAY 4..... supposed to be the begining of Stage 2.......the OUCH stage......we'll see, I cant handle more pain....the same, yes, I have a trick, the tylenols are my friends... more, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I shall go curl up and regret my existence in bed now...good night.

Ok, so befire I went to curl up, there was no ice cream or non dairy milk or whatever, so I got stuck putting down the same veggie puree that burns so much, so I did. IT FREAKING HURTS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! Especially in my ears, but to the point that I cant even open my mouth anymore. This was only about 10 teaspoons of this, thats enough! and then small salad bowl but of green JELLO which helped cool my throat down, then I tried chugging a bottle of water....which killed but I just wanted also to flush everything away in case because of the food I just consumed.... so now, I just popped in the T3s and I think I am becoming addicted to them....oh well....there is always rehab...

BTW, if at any time these posts offend anyone I wanna apologize in advanced, I am writing this very raw and un-editted... as it comes from mybrai to my fingertips, just because I wanna keep this REAL to what I am actually feeling and thinking about as I am going through this recovery. I forgot to say also high on painkillers..hehehe....I was gonna correct the spelling mistakes on this post but am feeling messed up right now, so I am gonna leave it and laugh about it in the future....just dont think I write like that normally...or this...or whatever......lol

Man, this should almost be a reality tv show. We should call it the recovery!

And yes, my doctor told me the same, its like scraping your kneeeee.........( he must have pulled a borat on me, coz he forgot the).....NOT!

It is Monday at 7:30 pm and I just got settled in at home again today. Yup, yesterday morning I got admitted into the hospital. After waiting on emerg coughing up so much blood, and having dried blood down around my lips (without realizing) the secretaries got me in to see the doctor quickly, how managed to open my mouth really wide and applied a heck of a lot of pressure to the wound. As well as she removed some Blod clots which I apperantely had a lot of, meaning that this has been bleeding for a while and the blood was coagulating, which is normal for the blood to do, but not for it to happen. SO right after the Emerg On Duty Doctor applies pressure she contacts the hospitals ENT who is not my surgeon, my surgeon is the hospitals ENT Mon to Fri and the other guy DR CHANG is on the weekend. So Here comes doctor Chang By this time it has been about 3 hours that I got there. And he pulls out a TONIL HEM kit that they have pre packaged at the hospital, so in a freaky type HOSTEL scene was the highlight of my visit. He opened my miuth and managed to stick down this huge metal tweezers type things and started to pull off a ******** of bloodclots. I mean a bunch, in different sizes, they looked like very large but more elastic pieces of Jello. So you just can imagine what this felt like, this like 50 year old Asian dr very nice, I LIKE "I make feel good" grabbing these metal tweezers and sticking them down my throat pulling the clots like a showman, once the twezers would be out of my mouth and the other half of the clot is stil ripping away from the felsh, the freaking thing stretches.... just stop and imagine from my prespective what this looked like......... NOT NICE!
Anyways, once he seizes to d othis, with out any painkillers, anesthetics or even a hug from my mother which I really needed by now, he takes those same tweezers and wraps a gauze around the end of it... then he soaks this in this liquid + garlic powder thing.... which makes your flesh burn, which it makes it cauterize....which means, it burns so it stops the bleeding.

So, how is he supposed to this, ah yes, only one way and one way only he says....be brave, breathe slowly and depp, it will be over soon and you wont remember what happened soon........he has to open my mouth, pull down my tongue with one hand / arm, and with the other insert the freaking metal tweezers all the way into my throat and apply pressures so that it cauterizes.

Interesting eh!

so the next 10 minutes where exactly like this:

Minute 1 - 4 = F*&(*, S*(&, DAMN, OUCH, OOOOOOOZA, BREATHE IN BREATHE OUT, DAMN OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH......F(*&^
Minute 5 - Nurse applies my new besst friend, MORPHINE!
Minute 6, 7, 8, - OUCH BUT BREATH, OUCH BUT BREATHE
Minute 9 and 10 - I mastered it, I breathed, and ignored the pain. ;-) I reached nirvana.......... yah, ok, whatever.....i know...

so then he decides to have me admitted, they are going to observate me for the night and then see what happens. Mo bleedin, Mo Poblems................lol

So over the course of the next day the ownderful nurses fed me morphine and gravol like there is no tomorrow.... even now, as soon as I close my eyes, I halcinate........and I think I am doing somehting, when I am not, and then Iopen my eys and find myself either doing it, pretending like I am doing soemthing or something stupid like that. The whole day today I waited for my dotcor (my surgeon) to come by, and he did and prescribed me the next level up from tylenol 3.........Can anyone guess what it is? no? ok, its called its called Endoce: Oxycoidone /Acetamin
Isnt it great?

I ate my first piece of solid food today though, a bran muffin, and then I bought another one andate it too....so 2 bran muffins and am about to have some mac and cheese. As for the pain, it has either gotten smaller or I am used to it.. Can do it with out the painkillers, but not without the drugs.

Day 5 - YEY I am home, handling it better, scabs are welcomed to come off and I am high as a kite. Later people.....by the way, I am in a heck of a lot of pain, cant sleep, go to the washroom, walk for more then 3 minutes or else, or many other things. AND DEFINITELY, the most important thing here is, WATER...BELIEVE ME, just those 2 extra glasses will make such a difference in how much pain you have, in how you sleep, pee, poo, talk, etc........trust me, the more water the better..... at least 6 glasses people, at least.........
Alonso

PS - Guys, I appreaciate the concern so much! THANKS for the comments you are all awesome...coz have actually given this pain some purpose, which for me now is to tell you all about it.

Oh yeah ,I was forgetting the ******** of antibiotics too, just imagine...I cant et the mac and cheese, I am going to try these new painkillers, 2 at a time......wohooo lets fly baby!

GO for it! Vent, rant, complain we will listen and sympathize.. I did it daily myself. Glad you are back in the real world. The chemical caurterization method applied sounds like Barium Sulfate.. my wounds had to be pack with it three times, but it did stopped the bleeding.

Best wishes and try a blender on the Mac-n-Cheese, that is how I got it down. It looks gross, but slides real well.

Sincerely,
MG

Hey man, thanks so much for listening. I am having a bit of a moment of lucidity here, so yeah, thanks.

I take it thatn that you do know how that cauterization procedure does hurt.

Anywho, I am eating a lot of ice cream now, and it getthe swelling down and makes the pain go away, and I am LOVING IT!. I just hope I dont get nauseaus. The new painkiller seem to be great so far. I took them one at a time and I am ok with that, I kind of dont wanna overdo it on the narcotics because I know I will regret it later, although this evening has seemed quite comical.

Anywho, I am off to bed, gotta drink the Milk of Magnesia for the constipation otherwise I am gonna have other problems.

See you all tomorrow!

Alonso
PS - Sleeping habits are different, they are now for about 1 - 2 hours at a time but I do notice I am snoring a lot less, and even with the inflamation . Imagine when this is all dsaid and done, no more snorring! OMG, just that makes it worth it. I have been snorring my entire life.

Today its been a weird day for me.
I chose not to take the painkillers today all day, meaning that instead of every 4 hours I spread them to only every 12 hours. So yes, I had a little bit more pain today, but I lived through it. It wasnt half as bad as the first 3 days. However, I feel like I am almost going through withdrawal symptoms from the morphine and tylenol 3 or whatever else I put in my body, that I am very irritable and moody today which is extremely unusual for me.

Therefore, I am just going to get to the point with the important things that happened today on DAY 7 from my surgery.

Not unbearable pain, but havent been able to eat. If someone has some really cool recipies or know of any products that I can go buy to eat, that would be so apprecieated. Please list them here. I rarely do groceries. So I am thinking tomorrow I should be going for some baby food (apricots and stuff) some bran muffins, milk, pudding, and then I dont know what else.
Suggestions are more then welcomed in the form of recipies or product recomendations.

So, Besides feeling ectremely irritable today, I had one episode with my throat today that was excrutiating. I am finding that cold compress reduces the pain a lot now. I went to sleep in the afternoon and I woke up about 2 hours after just to excrutiating throat pain. I hope this doesnt happen tonight but what reliefed it fairly rapidly was a bunch of freeze sticks or ice chips. Keep these ready and handy.

I am noticing today and extreme amount of saliva in my mouth and a lot more phlegm but alot more loose so hacking it up is not as difficult all the time.

Anyways, that was pretty much today. I am going to go and finish watching south park before I try to attempt to hit the snooze button.

Leve those comments please.
Alonso

Your pain management techniques---OD'ing one day/withdrawing the next---leave a lot to be desired. Your irritability is due to pain, your inability to eat is due to pain. Hopefully you will assume a more reasonable pain plan today.

I havent taken more medicine that that prescribed as prescribed, maybe one hour sooner but thats about it.
But thanks for the posting, I am trying to not take any painkillers and if I do to keep it a streched out minimum, I am starting to use a lot of cold compress and it seems to help out a lot. The morphine was given to me at the hospital.

Anywho, I appreciate your input. Any suggestions on how to reduce this pain? I just cant seem to be managing it properly.

I also dont seem to be able to catch any decent or 1/2 decent amount of sleep. Is this still normal on the seventh day? Suggestions?

Hey All

Thanks for following up on my thread, its much appreciated, you are helping me a lot to get through these times. I can say it is finally feeling better, yes at times it hurt a whole lot, as if I had just gotten them taken out, but its only about 6 times during the entireday, for about 10 minutes or 15 minutes each time.

This is what I find makes the pain go away fast. I tend to get these pain attacks when I am sleeping. So the frist thing is to get up and take a couple of deep breaths and relax. I have noticed these past few days that the more I am concentrating on the pain, the more I am getting tensed and the more my muscles quench, when my jaw muscles do this (especially because the pain is coming from so close to there), it makes the pain actually get worse. So take a deep breath, and grab a cold compress and a fresh cold bottle of water from the refrigerator. Take a few sips (they are going to hurt) but not as much as if the water was warm. then put the cold compress on you neck in the area where your throat hurts for maybe 2 minutes. At this point, scoot over to the refrigerator again, and grab the cantaloupe freezees (I find these are the least acidic and the least stingy when they melt). start sucking on one of these and enjoy it. as you are dong this, if its time for your pain medication only, start dissolving it in some water. Leave it and go to the washroom. By this time you might be finished with freeze #1. If you have those gargles that numb your throat (I cant remember the name) do them now. They also help clear any dry moucous from your throat area which may be aiding to cause pain while you are sleeping. Then, go to the dissolved painkiller if it is time to take it, dont just take it for the heck of it...TRUST ME! and then after that is done, finsh it off with one more soothing cold popsicle. If more cold compress is needed, apply for short periods of time. You dont wanna irritate your throat anymore. But this also helps to bring down the inflamation.

Now, here is something I wish I would have thought off 3 days ago when I first tried a milk product. Anyways, it is great. Its making me feel wonderfull. Get yourself some "BOOST" puddings and milkshakes. I try to keep it simple just in case so go for Vanilla. If you cant eat full meals (more than likely you wont be able to, I cant) start feeding with these as a compliment to your diet. This way you wont feel as weak. and last and not least, the water intake is making it easier to get through now.

Today has been a pretty good day. I had a really good nap, only took the painkillers 2wice today, and am not plannin on taking them to go to bed, as I want to not take them anymore. I feel fed (although kind of hungry) and have noticed that I have lost a LOT of weight allready, I would say 10 pounds approx. My face is looking pretty slim in comparison to last week. Still not up to be up and running, but at least up to be up and socializing at home with my family and friends that come over to cheer me up. By the way, socializing is still writing! lol

I am just waiting for the scabs to start falling off now if they havent yet. I see these white spots beside my UVULA which i am assuming are scabs, if someone else maybe knows what it might be, please advise.

This was DAY 7.

Alonso

AlonsoToronto,

The white spots on your uvula are probably scabs. If your throat, tongue, gums, and mouth get white and fuzzy and start to itch and burn... that is a different story (look up oral thrush). There tends to be collateral damage (my ENT's words) to the back of the tongue and rough of the mouth during surgery, because thay are working around the breathing tubes. I started noticing nicks and bruising on the roof of my mouth about day seven and I was able to see the U shaped clamp bruises on my tongue where it was mangled and strectched out of the way.

Anyone else wonder if they take wonderful snapshots of us in this state? I am sure it would be worth a few laughs.

I am glad things are looking up for you. Use a small flash light and have a friend/family member look back in your throat if you are unable. You should be able to tell if the scabs are gone or thinning. You will have a healthy pink versus the aweful yellow-white cottage cheese look going on back there... I still get the shivers thinking about the smell and taste. Must sip some hot cocoa now... better.

Best Wishes to you.

Thanks for the post, I am trying to go the rest of the way off painkillers. Although today I feel a bit of pain at times in my throat, and am wondering if it would be from the scabs. I also have been spitting a whole lot more than usual and been noticing that there is like crumbs (I think is little mini scab pieces) in my spit, when I spit.

Anywho, so today I hade some cool solid food. I like to cook, so I made CREPES for breakfast. In case someone doesnt know whata crepe is, it is a really really thin pancake. I made an omelete, 1 egg cheese and finely chopped mushrooms and rolled it in the crepe. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM
What a breakfast! But thats as much as solid food goes for me so the rest has been a meal replacement plan. However I am feeling SO MUCH better because I have food in me. The best part is that I do not snore anymore! ITS UNBELEIVABLE! I am 29 yrs old now, and its just unbelievable to not snore. I am feeling like even those 2 hours of sleep here and there are allready a lot "deeper" than 8 hours before.

This has been day 8.

Good to hear you are doing better.

I had my tonsils out a year ago and no one told me that I would be out of it for a few days. I lay in operation room telling the doc about school the next day. The next week, was exam week and I had already fully booked

"You think you're going to school tomorrow? HA HA HA HA...think again!"
The nurse came in and put the gas mask on my face.

Now, not knowing that I would be out of it for a while caused some serious problems. I had to taken cared of AND I had a young child, alone. Let's just say it would go to know that someone put it all together and when it was time to go home, someone came.

Around the second week, I lost my ability to speak properly. The doctor told me that it has something to do with my hearing etc. I sounded deaf and it was just another thing I wish I had known BEFORE the gas mask and that laughing doc.

Hope that made you smile.....I haven't been able to laugh about it as yet.

Hey All

I havent posted anything in a few days.
I just wanna let everyone know that I am almost fully back to normal. Its been just over 2 weeks since the surgery. THere is still some soreness in my throat but the pain is minor. I think the most important thing was actually to suck up the pain and eat some solids. It really sped up my recovery. As the doctor said it, it helps to re-strengthen the throat muscles that had just been so stressed.

Anywho, I am only having some "digestive" problems still, since the day I came back from the hospital, and still get really tired, but I am good. Food is going right through me though. I have my post op on dec 1st and will post something else then. To all the ones that are going through this, or are about to... hang in there....its worth it....

Hello, I am glad to hear you are doing better. I was wondering if you could tell me your signs and symptoms before you had your tonsils and adenoids removed. Under the Ears, Nose and Throat section on these health boards, my story is titled "Hard Swollen Neck Glands and Fatigue". I would appreciate any information you may have, thank you and take care.

I am so glad to hear that you are doing much better. I also haven't posted in quite a while, but I am also almost completely back to normal. My only problem is that I feel a bit 'fleshy' in the back of my throat in the morning. It's hard to describe, but it feels like it would be swollen, but then I eat breakfast and it goes back to normal. It took me almost 4 weeks to be able to eat most normal food and feel as close to normal as possible. I couldn't have anything but Ensure drinks and water for the 2nd week, and Ensure and clam chowder and a little bit of Campbells chicken and stars/rice in the 3rd week. It had stopped hurting at almost 3 weeks, but the swelling was so bad that trying to swallow food was impossible; it would just sit at the back of my throat and I'd have to cough it back out to prevent choking.

Anyway, as a result of my body eating nothing/so little, I also had a lot of digestive problems when I started introducing some normal food. I had diarrhea after every meal as my body got used to something other than Ensure! But it cleared up after about a week. (It didn't help that much of it was fast food, because I was so excited to eat again, that, after sitting home watching all those delicious looking commercials, I made an actual mental list of all the places I wanted to go, once I could swallow again!) It's a wonder I have managed to keep off 11 of the 16 pounds I lost from the procedure.

Again, I'm so glad you're feeling better. And while I'm posting, I want to thank mkgbrook for helping me through my hardest times on this board. (We had our procedures on the same day - Oct 17, but I only had a tonsillectomy.) I apologize for not posting as often, but I have been lurking and keeping up with everyone's stories. Now I can finally believe that it does get better. I thought I would never feel normal again, but thanks to the support from my family and the members of this board, I recovered in just under a month - and just in time to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner! :)

Take care,
Kelly

Kelly and Alonso,

I am glad that every one is doing well. If you imagined Thanks Giving was great.. wait until Christmas dinner, and all the candy and desserts, yumm! I hope that we all can stick around and check in on all those that will be fretting over there recoveries during the christmas holidays as well. I know that if you alone and in pain and unable to travel to family and friends it will be important to offer whatever pick me ups we can...

I am just so glad that I am able to use my CPAP again and get more than 2 hours of uninterrupted sleep again that I am running on a bit of a sleep high. It is great to feel rested once more. I too have had issues getting my digestive track back up to optimum conditions. The back door trots appear to be a common phenomenon to reintroduction of solid foods. The only down side to being cleared out in the head and throat for me is that, I am having difficulty drinking from the water fountains with out shooting the water out of my nose. Having done this three times now, and having watch my son do it many times now... I was sure it was a side effect of the tonsillectomy adnoidectomy.

For all other reverse nasal irrigators.. My ENT confirmed that with extremely large tonsils, it takes time for your uvula to readjust and be able to close off you nasal cavities when swallowing. This means if you are drinking liquids with you head parallel to the ground, there is a good chance something is going to slip by and come out your nose. Anybody else have this problem? I am curious as too how many adults have this lovely side effect, with children it is fairly common.

Respectfully Yours,
Melissa:wave:
