My father was diagnosed with PC earlier this year. We have been quick to seek treatment. He has had Lymph biopsies, bone scans, and a radical prosectomy within 6 months of detection.

Pre op his Gleason was 7.8. Post op it is now 2.8.

Today the doctors’ confirmed the worse. Even though all indications pointed to eradication, some microscopic cells must have spread.

They now want him to try Hormonal therapy. This is a very worrying time for my family. 52 Is such a young age to have this? He is a fighter, but the side effects will break him. We just want it to go.

We have only recovered from a loss four years ago to Cancer. This cant be happening again.

I assume you meant psa was 7.8 pre surgery and now is 2.8 post surgery. The gleason score is the score of how aggressive the cancer cells are when checked in a microscope after a prostate biopsy is done, gleason scores range from 1-10, the higher the score the worse the prognosis is. The psa is a blood test and post surgery psa should be less than 1 and should remain that way otherwise the psa tells you that cancer cells are still present since the prostate is gone.
I am sorry that you are having to go through this, cancer is an awful disease, my fil was also diagnosed last yr, but his had already spread and surgery was not an option. Hormonal therapy can help control this disease for varying amounts of time, I have chatted with someone whose husband has been on hormones for 13yrs and living with prostate cancer. My fil was treated with hormonal therapy the main side effect he had was hot flashes which can be controlled with other medications.
Good Luck to you and your family in fighting this horrible disease.

Thanks yes thats what I meant. Am confused and not thinking straight at the moment. The news has hit us badly today.

He is having radiation on his chest to help reduce the drug from forming breasts first. And then he starts therapy.

Casodex is the name of the drug.

Thanks

A friend has been on hormone treatment for about a year after he was diagnosed with a PSA in mid 20s and PC which had already spread to his bones.

He's been coping well with hormone treatment and not many side effects due to his lifestyle changes and keeping active.

He posted his story on the website www.yananow.net which has stories from many men who have used various treatments. Look under "mentors experiences"

I usually suggest the book "Prostate Cancer Prevention and Cure" by Lee Nelson. It's very comprehensive and covers lifestyle changes and treatment options.
Lee Nelson used radiation and hormone treatment himself some years ago. He has subsequently written the book and recently won $1,000,000 prize in a poker championship, so he is obviously still functioning well.
