View Full Version : 12 after tonsillectomy and scabs aren't gone yet!

I had my tonsillectomy the 1st of this month. I've done wonderfully great. The pain was the worst the first 5 days. But the painkillers kept me mostly asleep. I kept myself well hydrated even though it hurt to swallow. About he 5-6th day I restarted my regular diet except for very hard foods and avoid spicy/citrus foods. My pain is totally gone & I can swallow without any pain now. The only thing remaining and reminding me about my surgery are my scabs. I read that they took about 5-10 days for them to fall off. The other day most of my left side scab fell off, but today when I looked in the mirror it "came back." I am getting pretty tired of being stinky all day! The smell and taste awful. I hope they are gone in the next day or so. Anybody has any remedies?

Thanks

Hi,,

I had my tonsils out Oct. 23, and it was only this Wed. or Thursday that I looked and saw that the scabs are *almost* entirely gone. The bad taste is gone 99% of the time, thank goodness, and the remaining pain is really more of a discomfort (very mild), but I don't think it's too unusual to ahve some amount of scab left up to 3-4 weeks past surgery. The thickness and amount will slowly lessen, you will see more and more pink, and eventually they will be gone.

Thanks a million :) I hope they are gone totally when I go back to my ENT the 1st of December. Well the taste is still there, my family is telling me that I don't smell anymore. Some brownish-blackish remains came out of my nose when I blew it. I wonder what there are??? They smell horrible. I guess it has to be something to do with my tonsillectomy, because I also had my adenoids removed also.

Thanks for the comfort.

I had my tonsils removed on October 6 and my post-op was October 20 and I still had a lot of scabbing and my surgeon said it is NORMAL and that it can sometimes take as long as 4-6 weeks for the scabs to be completely gone. I think mine were completely cleared out by about 3- 3½ weeks point.

Guest007,

Those brownish-black remains are dried blood, mingled with mucus. The blood probably drain up there during the surgery, if you didn't have anything donw to you sinus cavities while you were under. I will be four weeks post op tomorrow. I still have a few lingering scabs, but I am able to do pretty much anything, but use my CPAP.

Keeo your head up it will get better almost exponentially now.

Sincerely,
MG

I had mine done on Nov 1st. My scabs are still hanging in there too. I follow up with ENT on 11/16. I'm sure they'll tell me it's normal.

I've also gradually gotten back to a normal diet. Salty things still hurt though.
