[Updated 02/21/2001]

Here is what I have learned about seizures and nutrition over the last four years.

1. Aspartame lowers the seizure threshold.

2. Magnesium and potassium are leached from the body in urine and perspiration.

3. Soft water contains less much less magnesium than hard water. Reverse osmosis water contains virtually none.

4. Low levels of magnesium (especially), potassium, and taurine can produce
abnormal heart rhythms.

5. Caffeinated coffee and chocolate can each produce abnormal heart rhythms and seizures.

6. Abnormal heart rhythms can cause seizure-like episodes, chest pains, pain
radiating down the left arm, crossed vision, and fainting.

7. Someone who consumes 10 packets of Equal per day in five cups of coffee (made with soft or reverse osmosis water) might eventually begin to seize.

8. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can trigger seizures.

9. Alcoholic drinks increase the tendency to seize.

Here is the solution:

1. Eliminate aspartame from your diet. That includes all diet soft drinks, many regular (nondiet) soft drinks, most artificial sweeteners, MSG, and hydrolyzed vegetable protein.

2. Reduce or stop your consumption of diuretic drinks, like coffee and alcohol.

3. Reduce or stop your consumption of caffeinated coffee and chocolate.

4. Eat sensible foods that are rich in magnesium and potassium. Vegetables are by far the most dense source of potassium. Radishes provide a whopping 19 mg of potassium per Calorie. Blackstrap molasses (not plain molasses) contains lots of potassium and many trace minerals.

5. Supplement your diet with slow-release magnesium.

6. Drink lots of water. Of the most commonly available spring waters, Evian contains more minerals than most and tastes excellent.

7. Eat foods that promote your body's production of taurine (an amino acid), like shellfish, egg yolks, and meat.

8. Supplement your diet with taurine. A very good source is magnesium taurate.

9. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice.

Footnotes:

1. The effects of aspartame are wide-ranging and severe, so it should be
eliminated from all diets immediately. Those who face the greatest risk are children and pregnant women. Search the Internet for information on the keyword "aspartame."

2. I used to be a patient. I am not associated with any organization that sells anything referred to in this message.

3. Expect to see many other benefits from this minor adjustment in diet, including greater energy, less fatigue, less irritability, and fewer and less severe moodswings. Those who have been labeled ADD or ADHD may improve greatly.

4. Do not waste your money on potassium supplements. Make sure you get enough potassium from your food every single day. A little blackstrap molassses will do the trick.
