my ENT scheduled me for a hearing test. after it was performed, i was told that i can hear regular sounds just fine, but that i can only understand 85% of words and speech. so what does this mean for me? will i need hearing aids? also, no one in my family has ever had hearing problems until later on in life, but i am only 19!

I started to wear hearing aides when I was 31. It was rather frightening. At my last hearing test, which was last week, the ENT looked at me and said I had a very significant hearing loss, and stupidly I didn't even ask how much. I guess I was afraid to ask since the last time it was well over 50-55%.
He did a wierd test behind the bone of my head/ear. I failed it. I wasn't able to hear anything from the back of my ears/head. The sides of my ears I could hear this silver object test just fine, but not behind with the low tones. It was as if I were completely without any hearing at all. It was freaky.
In my family there is a lot of hearing loss on my dads side. My twin sister is losing her hearing as well. I get a lot of ear infections every year as an adult, and they are very severe to the point where I am not able to swallow anything due to such a terrible sore throat/ear pain.
