I have a 3 year old that started having seizures in October. He had one waking up that morning and we had EEG, and CAT SCAN ran, nothing showed up. Then in November he started having seizures about every 45 minutes and went into status elpitus. He was put in the hospital for 2 days the started him on Dilantin the first day and then moved him to Depakote. We tryed that. It didn't stop them. So they added on Tegretol. He keep having drop seizures so they weaned him off it and added Topamax. Just last week he had two grad-mal seizures and another one yesterday. The recent EEG showed generalized epilepsy. His neuroligist said that if he had another grand-mal that I needed to take him to the local hospital and get him started on Dilantin. I have noticed that every time he has the grand-mal seizures he has been on an antibotic for either a ear infection, or last he was on an antibotic for a sinus infection there has been no fever this time. Does an illness like that knock off all the levels of medicine? This is not my 3 year old son anymore he is a totally different person. With ever medicine they add he has so many different side affects. Is this all common, and what else should I expect???? Should I get a second opinion or does it take a while to get them lined out. It's only been 5 months but it seems like it been 3 years.

hello there, maybe he is allergic to the antibiotic or an active ingredient in the antibiotic. my daughter is eight and she has some sort of sleep terrors and sometimes she has them but can remember them and comes out when you touch them. i read on the i-net that your inner ear can do that. it will make you seize like that. do a search on the internet on inner ear infections and seizures you will be very surprised at what you will find. i know that you must feel so scared. but don't worry the internet is a great source for information. good luck to you.

MY DAUGHTER STARTED HAVING SEIZURES AT 10 MONTHS, SHE ALWAYS HAD EAR INFECTIONS, OR ANY ILLNESS OR TEETHING.WE ALSO FOUND OUT SHE HAD AN IMMUNE GLOBULIN DEFIENCY, BY AN ALLERGIST. THERE IS A LINK AN EAR SPECIALIST SAID WE HAD TUBES PUT IN.IT HELPED GREATLY. SHE OUTGREW THE SEIZURES AT AGE 5. SHE WILL BE TWELVE YRS OLD TOMORROW. NO MEDS AT ALL. IMMUNE GOLBULIN DEFIENCY GONE ALSO. THANK GOD. I WAS TOLD MOST KIDS OUTGROW THEM. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS TO DEAL WITH THIS, OUR FAITH IS WHAT GOT US THROUGH, DONT GIVE UP.

My son was on Depakote and Tegretol but he keep having drop seizures so they weened him off the Tegretol and added Topamax. They said if he had one more grand-mal seizure for me to take him to the nearest hospital and get him started on Dilantin? Did she she any side affect to the medicine she was on??

THE TEGRETOL MADE HER SLEEPY, SLOWED HER DOWN RIGHT AFTER TAKING IT, IT DECREASED HER APPITITE TOO. SHE WAS VERY SMALL BACK THEN. EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST TWO EPISODES BEFORE MEDICINE, SHE ALWAYS HAD GRANDMAL SEIZURES. THERE ARE A FEW THINGS OR TRICKS WE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY. LIKE DONT USE ALCOHOL TO GET A FEVER DOWN,IT DECREASED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MEDICINES, NEVER GIVE ERYTHROMYCIN WHEN ON TEGRETOL. DURING A SEIZURE WE ALWAYS WIPED HER DOWN WITH A COOL WET BATHCLOTH HEAD TO TOE. IT SEEMED TO SHORTEN HER SEIZURES, AND IT CALMED US TOO. READ LABELS THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF ALCOHOL IN SUNSCREEN,AND BUG REPELANTS. SHE WOULD ALWAYS BE POSTICCTAL AFTER AND SLEEP FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. SHE NEVER KNEW THAT SHE HAD A SEIZURE, AND WE NEVER KNEW WHEN ONE WOULD STRIKE,EXCEPT WHEN SHE WAS GETTING SICK, USUALLY COLDS, EAR INFECTIONS, SINUSES.

Thanks for all the info. I had no idea about the alcohol. He seems to get very hiper when the add a new medicine. We can't control him for about a week. I don't know if it has alot to do with being 3 years of age or not. Tell you daughter Happy Birthday!!

A ketogenic diet has been used to successfully treat epilepsy in children. Just do an internet search such as on www.google.com (http://www.google.com) and search for the words "ketogenic" and "epilepsy" for more info. A ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrates (sugars, starches, etc.). Ketones are produced as by-products of fat metabolism. The brain will use ketones in preference to glucose for fuel when it is available; however, the body will not metabolize fat as long as glucose from carbohydrates is available.

My husband had epilepsy also as a child and he out grew it after 5 years they weaned him off the medication. So pray he does also. My son hardly eats anyway I just don't know if he's a canidiate for this diet or not.
